I know we generally do not pay to game on PC but why? The dedicated servers for these games cost a lot of money a month so who pays for this and why? In Battlefield 2142 a ranked server cost $250.00 a month for 64 players and that is expensive.

Yes, but it is costing the server owners that $250 a month, not us.

Because they advertise sometimes on servers to generate income, or a company might host the server to advertise, or clans donate a few bucks per month to rent out servers, or people are crazy and build their own servers for people to play on.

Yea I figured it's something like that. I don't see much advertisement money coming in from the majority of these battlefield servers so i don't see the incentive. But hey at least i am not the one paying.

Advertisement, sponsorship (if clan server), or just *i want my own* syndrome.

250$ a month may be pushing it for traditional games like shooters, i run a CS 1.6 & Source server with leftover parts from upgrades. It work wells and doesn't cost me anything, sure it's not uber great compared to the 8-cores Xeon monster but dedicated servers don't need that much.

the 250$ is mostly connection, personally i pay 60$/month for 10mbits and illimited upload/download (which are crucial to dedicated servers)

Well the server costs a lot of money because it has to be a pretty powerful machine to run 64 players at a time with no lag. Hardcore people like having their own server, clans need their own servers too, and other people just have money to blow.

I run a 12 man CS Server, it costs me 23 dollars a month, which isn't bad at all.  It depends on the game and number of players, I'm under the impression most of the 64 player servers are either paid for by many, many people in a clan or by a large company.

PC gaming is free for the ones who choose not to pay monthly for their own server or MMO games.

Cause someone else is paying for it. If you value the game that you play you will pay to host a server, if the cost is shared by a clan it usually isn't that bad.

$250 a month is a lot for a server, especially if it's just a virtual, game dedicated server. I have a whole physical server to do with what I please (including resale rights on the bandwidth and server resources) and a 10MB unmetered connection for under $100 a month.

Many servers have loyal members that will donate to pay for the server fees. And servers can charge monthly for reserve slots so members always get in. its a win win situation.
