How long until 4k takes over

If this is about PCs and not 4K TVs, then we need two things.

Mainstream 4K Monitors and mainstream 4K GPUs.

I think we can safely say that we need around 3 years (unless Volta or next AMD architecture will give $200-$250 4K GPUs and not to mention that we need to convince monitor manufacturers not to charge an arm and a leg for a good 4K monitor).

@Coseniath: it's about 4k in general, like literally everything today is 1080p it is the accepted standard of hd and I'm just wondering how long until 4k eventually hits that point and ultra hd will be the normal instead of hd

I'd say 3 years too...damn ! imagine 10 years from now, it's gonna be 8k probably

For complete takeover and not just for gamers I'd say 5 years or even more, for us gamers I'd say 3 years, when 8K and VR will start to shine up.

3-5 years from those options there. Though I think it will take even longer for it to really replace the 1080P today. There are still more people with 1080P monitors than 1440P I believe.

I just bought an Acer Predator in 1080p, so hopefully not within the next year or two. I'd say 3-5 years

I saw an 8k tv at the philadelphia museum of art. It had actual 8k content of some forest scene. It looked incredible. Cant wait!

But I don't think it'll become mainstream for another 3-5 years. I've hooked up my PC to my 4K TV to tinker around with it, and man...them is some pretty pixels...

1440p master race

None of the above. I think eventually it will phase out 1080P as the medium standard, but probably not for 10 years at the very least. 4k perceptually looks about what...5% better at sitting distances that people actually sit at? And keep in mind that running something in 4k will always be more hardware intensive than 1080P. Do you think developers would rather target 144 FPS 4k or 144 FPS 1080P with a single high end card? Probably not, because the developer targeting 1080P will have the vastly better looking game given the hardware resources available. I think to assume 4k will become a standard assumes that a lot of people are going to acquire a lot of money really fast and upgrade their hardware. People don't buy TV's that often - the vast majoirty people with 1080P TV's now likely aren't going to ditch for 4k until their set dies or until 4k is dirt cheap while actually retaining better IQ than 1080P.

I don't actually see any logic in 4k becoming the standard at any point, but I know a lot of people are going to buy it anyways. But frankly, will it even be 4k at that point? Or will there be 5k, 8k, etc. before the 4k standard truly gets established?

EDIT: My post is assuming we're talking about 4k standard in PC gaming as well as a TVs and gaming monitors.

I used a 22" CRT until two years ago. I don't ever plan to buy into 4K. Unless I have to I guess.

For Gaming and Movie buffs probably 3-5 years, BUT remember everyone TV broadcast signals are only in 720p or 1080i. NOT EVEN 1080p

So for the average consumer who just wants a TV to watch sports and shows 4k is absolutely not needed. BECAUSE TV NETWORKS DONT BROADCAST ABOVE 720P OR 1080i!!!

If anything for TV the move is too soon. Up until 2010 OTA stations were still broadcasting in SD.

It'll take at least 1 more gpu generation or 2 more. The cost is way too high for 4k to take over. Even the 1080 gtx can't max all games at 4k and that cards over 700 dollars... that is out of reach for the majority of people so 1080p to 1440p is currently what is popular for most.

When they put out 4k cards that can at least put out 60 fps for less than 500 dollars people will get into that. But even with that, most gamers want high refresh rate gaming, so 4k may be further off than that. I always go higher fps over higher resolution. And you won't see affordable 4k 120fps gaming for a while.
