Noob question, and i know there are a lot of variables to consider.... but with these steam sales i'm buying games like crazy and I just want to be cognizant of some nebulous memory threshold i shouldn't pass. Should I only have so many installed on my computer at a time for performance sake? Does it impact performance significantly?
your computers performance won't change much when installing games.. just be sure to atleased keep 10% or something free of your primary HD oh and I usually have ~15 games installed
Atleast the good thing about STEAM is that you don't have to download the game until you actually want to play it,and once you are done you can delete it. The reason for that is that all the games that you do have with STEAM are always in your library of games on their website.

Currently I have 28 games installed.
I have over 100 games installed and its from Steam, Origin, Impulse and some "none download digital" games. Just remember to deframent your HDD once and awhile, then you'll be fine and like other people said to get some good free space on Windows drive.
I've got 26 non-Steam games (which does include Half Life, Half Life 2, HL2: Episode 1 &2 - I actually have physical copies of these games so I don't consider them Steam bought) installed and for Christmas my younger brother went crazy on buying me games for a gift, so I have 19 Steam games. 45 games in all. I've got another 200+ games (70 more on Steam and a good 130+ physical copies of other games). Too many games and not enough time to play them!
