Kinda off topic but...will the HD4870 drop in price after the introduction on the R700?Snosavan24
Hell no,,,its really cheap for what you are getting. The 4870 along with the 4850 is the bargain of this generation!
I guess you guys are right. I'll probably just wait for a price drop.
Edit: Actually, in my case, I was planning to crossfire this month but since the HD4870x2 is coming out, I might as well sell my single HD4870 and pay about $300 more for the R700. I mean.. that's how much I would be paying more to get another HD4870. Yeah, looks like I'll get it but it depends on the price. $550, I probably wont be getting it, yet..
My 4870 crossfire will serve me just as good as the 4870x2 at 1920x1200, and I will be able to overclock them past what the 4870x2 can due to the nature of two gpu on a single pcb with the heat and non reference layout design.
If i was 2560x1600 then maybe.. but if i can spend 1500 on a monitor then I wouldnt think twice about taking a loss and getting the 4870x2.
So nah. I am fine where i am. All ofthe preview sites for 1920x1200 say the same.

You should always get what you will be happy with.
Let me put it this way.
I know my expectations and what types of games I want to play now and in the future. I know the engines they are using, the physics adoptions, and overall I got my setup because it is exceeding my requirements.
If you dont know, or dont feel secure, then do what you must. 4870 cf or 4870x2 are both extremly viable and powerful setups. Either is exceptional. However you can have the most powerful setup out there but still not be happy because it just wasnt what YOU wanted. Being the best on the hardware and feeling satisfied are often different.

I like for my PC to exceed recommended settings. I like my build to last so I try to get the best or close to the best stuff out there, if I can. I'm not really happy with what a single HD4870 can do at this point so I'll have to opt for something greater/better. I'm more than sure the HD4870x2 will do that.

Might I ask.. what in particular were you unhappy with in a single 4870?
I just bought the parts for my new PC (first build; did a lot of research/forum browsing), and went with a 4850 as a place holder for now. Thankfully, the mobo I got is built to last (as far as the 775 socket is concerned :P), and is a very nice ASRock X48 DDR2/DDR3 hybrid.
Later on, when I save up some more money, I'll make the jump to an HD 4870X2 or dual HD 4870's, but, for now, a single HD 4850 is more than enough for me, and a very big step up from my old GPU (a pathetic PNY 7900 GS :() ATI's new cards really excite me. :D I just hope they release some official drivers soon. =/
Edit: Getting a 4870 would've put me overbudget :( thus the reason for the 4850 placeholder.
rocking integrated graphics since 9/04/05 thats when i got my first laptop, and i never felt a need to upgrade untill I started playing wow and rediscoverd the PC, i used to play AOEII a whole lot, in fact I still do, but the stuttering of wow, and lag i shall finaly upgrade, ode to the pc the only gaming machine that one has complete controll over and can be modified to work in a card board box lol
Pentium 4, 512gb ram integrated graphics, in the house... yea yea lol

Drivers. I know it's still a young card but it can be unstable sometimes. Hopefully, new drivers will make this card better but I dont know if I'll be sticking around that long. Dont get me wrong, it's a very good card. I guess my standards are higher, unfortunately.

Sweet man, I have the same mobo. I overclocked my CPU to 3.8ghz and it's running stable. I'm going to mess around with it more and get it up to 4.0ghz, just for fun. It's a great mobo for the price and it runs nice and cool. An HD4850 is a good card. Best bang for your buck. Yeah, we need some drivers.
Only a nerd would spend more than $300 for a video card but thats just me:)PC_X360
I admit that I'm a bit of a nerd. I'm one of those people that can dress up all nice, go to a meeting, or party and really have a good time. But then, I have this nerd side of me, that loves gaming, whether it be PC, consoles, you name it. I'm too much of a gadget person. I'd rather go to Fry's or shop on newegg.com than go to Disneyworld. :P

What driver issue do you have? I have done extensive testing with single and crossfire and pretty much every game has gotten awsome scaling, even crysis when you think about it, which includes GRID that anandtech said was totally borked.
I am not trying to talk you out of it. I just wondered what issue you have and maybe I can help you. If for anything, it is to make sure it isnt something else causing you to have some issues.
Are you using 8.6, 8.6 hotfix, 8.7 beta, or 8.7 official? There is 8.8 beta right now out that seems to help crossfire.
[QUOTE="foggy666"]going strong with my X1950XT, I play CoH mostly so no need for upgrade yet :)Elann2008
Woot, COH ftw. :) I love that game. I still play it till this day. That card was a beast in its time.
X1900 series cards are still beasts. They still max 90% of games at 1680x1050 with no AA or AF (and quite a bit with!) which is pretty good. I just upgraded from one, superb card.

The drivers are still pretty young, but they don't give me any real issues either. I'm using 8.7, Vista has bluescreened a couple times on me during gaming, says the ATI driver was to fault, but it's pretty expected on the official first set of drivers. However when the driver doesn't flake out on me, everything is running exceptionally well!
2 HD 4870s have served me greatly so far, and I only expect it to get better. This setup should last me quite a while.

I have tested every game and demo i can with my crossfire setup. I havent yet to find a game that dosent add performance with crossfire. It isnt always big, but it works. Take DMC4. I got 100% scaling in that game. I set AA to application controlled in CCC and as edge detect. I selected 8x in DMC4 settings making it 24xCFAA. Ran it as a single 4870 and as a crossfire setup 1920x1200 with every setting maxed period. Double fps across all four tests of the benchmark. Crysis I see a increase as well, albiet not as huge. Grid sees a huge benefit to crossfire as well as I was playing the demo and maxed every single setting at 1920x1200 and got 60's FPS in the city track with all of the cars. AoC I was getting, 1920x1200 every setting maxed, 30-40 in tarania "sp" running around with the lowest hitting mid 20's on a dip. Crapload of textures with that maxed, including all viewing, and the crossfire setup took it like a champ. I am using quarls texture pack tommorow on oblivion and see how it runs 1920x1200.
No slowdowns. No crashes. No stalls. No outright freezes. No screen tearing.
Tested Crysis, CoD4, UT3, Grid, AoC, FEAR, Quake 4, Titan Quest, Total War Medieval, Loki, Everquest II, Flight Sim X, The Witcher, World in Conflict, and more. Almost all scaled somewhat, albiet a few didnt, but none saw reduced performance due to the crossfire bug. However 90% of my games showed acceptable or better scaling and performance.
8.6 hotfix drivers btw.
However I dont want to come off to Elann as peer pressure. He has been a good chap on all of the 4870 debates and he just wants the best setup for himself. I just however want to make sure it isnt a issue outside of the gpu itself so if he does go with the 4870x2 that he gets the most out of the setup.

Ah, I tried the GRID demo as well, it was impressive how buttery smooth that game runs with Crossfire. Also, edge-detect is impressive, 12x and 24x box samples with the memory footprint of 4x and 8x of traditional box AA respectively, a major advantage of HD 4870 AA. It'll be great when they get edge-detect to work with DirectX10 titles.
Lol np guys. It's probably me being a newbie. I just get these nasty hiccups on Crysis. I can max most games and never see a hitch in framerate. It was probably the artifacting that happened once, earlier today. A bunch of gray spots started flying all over the screen. And, I wasnt happy at all with overclocking it. I didnt see any gains in FPS in any games, not even Crysis. I put it back on stock and it ran better. I'm not saying overclock should always increase performance but I would expect it from this great card. Maybe, I'll see better performance in crossfire. I was planning to buy another HD4870 anyways.
What do you guys think about Crossfire? I know that some of you have Crossfire setups. What are your gains in FPS? Crysis, World in Conlict, etc? Well, what were your FPS gains from a single HD4870 to Crossfire? And were you able to up your settings?

You dont understand. I was going to buy another HD4870 to Crossfire. If the HD4870x2 is around $500, I might as well sell my current HD4870 for around $200-250, and use that money towards buying the HD4870x2.
If I keep my HD4870 and crossfire it with another one, it will cost me $300 more anyways. So, it comes out to be the same price and deal. I might as well get the HD4870x2 and be set for a long time. I wont have to upgrade for like 1-2 years.
I would go CrossFire or get an X2 card, but I run a software triplehead, so it wouldn't do much for me. The drivers only let you run one monitor, which sucks.kodex1717
Cant run three monitors.. but two will work with Crossfire.
Happily, though, AMD's newer drivers pretty much blow that limitation away. They've delivered the "seamless" multi-monitor/multi-GPU support AMD promised at the time of the Radeon HD 3870 launch. Here's what I was able to do as a result. I connected a pair of monitors-a 30" LCD with a dual-link DVI port and an analog CRT-to a Radeon HD 3870 in a CrossFire pairing and enabled CrossFire. Both displays continued to show the Vista desktop with CrossFire enabled. Then I ran UT3 and played full-screen on the LCD. The CRT continued to show the Vista desktop just fine. Next, I switched UT3 into windowed mode, without exiting the game, and the transition went smoothly, with both displays active. Finally, I dragged the UT3 window to span both desktops, and it continued to render everything perfectly. Here's a screenshot, wildly shrunken, of my desktop session. Its original dimensions were 2048x1536 plus 2560x1600, with the UT3 window at 2560x1600.

Give me the resolutions and AA for crysis and I can run the demo benchmark for you. Just give me what you wanna see.
I also run the WiC demo. I have ran it with and without crossfire and there is a difference. Tell me the settings you want.
I am asking for the settings you want so you can compare it directly to your own. I have ran the crossfire setup 790/1100 and never seen artifacts. Crysis is a total bum on ati cards but its getting better. I have ran 1920x1200 on the beach and with the unpatched demo did great. No hitching and FPS stayed above 20 and hung around 30 mostly 1920x1200 very high hack at the first village fight. I dove into the tree flora to check the fps with fraps and got no big issue.
So be honest here. give me the games and I will bench it with and without crossfire and if you want me not to oc i will. Or i can do it without Crossfire and have one stock and one oc, and then do the same with crossfire, so you can see if ocing helps in single gpu or crossfire.
I dont mind. I will give you the deal and if you feel its best to get the 4870x2 i will encourage you. However i dont want you to get the 4870x2 and it not do anything for you if your not taxing a crossfire setup for whatever potential reason. I.E. dont want you to waste any money.

Indeed, Crysis on Very High at 1920x1200 ran pretty well, there was a bit of slowdown in areas but expect more driver optimizations. Above 20fps and around 25-30fps most of the time jumping to 35fps in some areas. Not bad for Crysis v1.0.0.1, I'm sure v1.2 is more kind to Crossfire.
I will also help you out here, no need to waste money if two HD 4870's will do the same for you, you don't wanna waste that extra PCI Express x16 lane do you?
