Seeing as that could be the last stand to save the game, the real question is how many of you will actually be convinced that it'll be worthwhile without a monthly fee. Me personally, I was waiting for this to be announced so I could start playing it. I think the game is great fun but I'm not willing to pay $15 a month on it, or any game for that matter, but that's just me.

Aye. Had played in a friends account (he was eager to have someone to play with), and the game is no good. They should be paying me for playing the game.

I played TOR during the open beta for about 1 hour and I was not impressed, especially by the combat. Maybe I was just not in the right mood, so I will give it another go if Gw2 is not holding me

Despite playing together with a good RL friend over skype the game got incredibly boring after a while, so no, I will never go back.

If I can convince a friend or 2 to start playing I'll probably give it another whirl. I think I would enjoy the storylines, and I don't even mind shelling out money on microtransactions.

I will, the one obstacle was the monthly fee. I can't see spending $15 a month on something that I might get to play maybe a few hours each weekend. Some months I might not get to touch it at all.

Been there, done that, and I have no intention on going back. Two months was probably one month more than I needed to see all I wanted to see in TOR.

I've been playing the game since launch. I figure that I will continue playing the game and see if any changes will be made to improve gameplay. I loved TOR RPG games on xbox and the game really attempts to be like them... But the end game content is my biggest complaint. There's just nothing to do after you get your PVP armor and raid the few zones that you can raid. I'm really hoping the community will pickup when the f2p version launches.

Yeah I'll probably mess around the game a bit when it's free. As long as my characters aren't restricted in some manner.

I enjoyed beta testing the bounty hunter. Some of the naming restrictions I wasn't crazy about. You should NOT be able to name your character IG-88, Luke nor Solo but I'm pretty sure I couldnt use Jaster Sixx, Dak or possibly Kath Hound Dak . Of course being that I came from a game with heavy name-squatting -- city of heroes -- and I just blurted half my names to the world, maybe I'm a little dis allusionsed with MMOs in general if not swtor

I have great memories of City of Heroes. Imagine a spandex-clad pick-up group of 5 staring into the start of a dungeon only to see every villain is at least 3 levels higher than us. Thennnnn the guffaws begin:

"Who's idea was it to do this mission?!"

"Oh, man! What idiot put this team together? No way are we going to be able to beat this."

Then it gets down to some guy's huge avatar at the end. Tattoos cover his bare chest. An intimidating hari-krishna ponytail sprouts from his otherwise shaven head. Muscles rippling...he speaks....

"Hold me."

Played for about 2 months at launch. Might reinstall it but I doubt I'll stick with it. I don't even much time to play anymore let alone dedicate hours to an MMO but it would be free so it isn't like I'm wasting month other than buying the game in the first place haha.

If you play casually and not 24/7, most of the game is free. If you want to do operations (raids), you'll have to subscribe though. Sounds like a good deal to me. You could level a million characters to level cap and get any gear you want without paying a dime, and then sub if you want to do raids at endgame

Yeah, that will probably be the difference maker for some. Can you clarify one thing though.. if you can get any gear you want without "raiding" then why the need for raids? Don't those raids offer gear not available in other areas of the game?

I meant up to raiding. There's loads of flashpoints with great gear as you work your way to 50, and even then you can get sweet gear from pvp matches as well from 10-50.

I'm a one MMO kind of person, and nothing can hold a candle to WoW. I tried TOR, but I wont be going back. It was mind numbingly boring, the highest I made it was lvl 42.

I'll probably try it out. The content they will be letting everyone play for free is pretty much the only content in the game that I'm interested in. I personally couldn't care less if the game is pay2win or not since the competetive part of it doesn't interest me. I'll just play it as a single player game, or possibly co-op with some friends.

I was willing to pay the fee and was really excited for it until I started hearing some bad vibes, my buddies weren't buying it and everyone just expected it to go f2p (Penny Arcade even made a comic on that prediction).

I'll check it out, I love Star Wars, I love Bioware and KOTOR so hopefully the story can keep me enthralled enough to look past the boring gameplay.

Everyone says the gameplay is boring but I just found it similar to KOTOR (without pause). Don't go off what people say here, most of them hate BioWare and EA. Saying that, the game isn't what I was personally expecting, but it's still fun as a Co-Op Campaign Game. Some of the story branches are pretty good imo.

http://games.on.net/2012/08/subscription-mmos-are-dead-long-live-free-to-play/

Very interesting article and mirrors something that I have been saying for the past 2 months. MMOs these days are all going F2P, because that's the only way they can maintain themsleves profitable (except WoW which is a rare beast).

F2P doesn't necesarrily mean failure, that's a thought of the past. Look at LOTRO and how much it's earning now. There are cases where some MMOs fail even with F2P as well of course.

He's trolling. The only things you can buy in the shop are cosmetics and junk. And since the game is PvE centered and pvp is an afterthought, pay2win doesn't even make sense in this game

I thought so. According to this comparison chart: http://www.swtor.com/free/features You get HEAPS of gameplay from the F2P model. I'm actually digging this now cause it allows me to have GW2, SWTOR and either WoW:MoP or TSW installed and I can play all of them at once (I can't afford to pay more than one MMO at a time).

LotRO was out for 3 years before it went F2P it also wasn't the most expensive MMORPG ever developed. Apples and oranges. Even EA is admitting that TOR has been a disappointing failure, why can't you? Why continue to defend this albatross?

I also think that article (one person's opinion) is BS and proves nothing. Rift seems to be doing fine. EVE seems to be doing fine, too.

Maybe the subscription model is finished for big budget, me-too MMORPGs but I believe there is still a market for smaller games to survive. I would gladly pay $15-$20 a month for a good, skill-based, sandbox MMORPG. I would much rather pay up front than be nickle-and-dimed to death through micro-transactions.

Yeah, same here FelipeInside. What is your progress in The Secret World? I still love the atmosphere and art design. The lore is still impressive but I'm taking a break from it, but I am definitely not quitting the game for good. I just don't think I'll be playing much TSW at all this month so I figured I'd save the $15, take a break from that, and play some SP-games. I'll most likely resub after the new issue/big update arrives.

GW2 is a definite buy though, as you know I've pre-ordered the CE and I'm looking forward to it more than I have before despite the beta experience. Since SWTOR is going F2P, I'll definitely reinstall it. I don't think I mind will change about TOR, but it will be free so it doesn't matter anyways. I'll probably plug in an hour here or there, but nothing significant. It'll all be about GW2 and TSW.

This will be interesting because I've never played more than one MMO at any given time. Money was/is never an issue with MMOGs. It's the time that is my concern, and the value I'm getting out of it to pay up front cost for the game and monthly sub. GW2's business model just makes it easier to decide, which I appreciate.

I'm same as you, time is my issue. I could "maybe" afford 2 MMOs at the same time, but gameplay wise I really only have time for one (maybe 2). I like to keep updated with SP games and my occasional CoD and BF3 MP moments. Like you say though, if SWTOR is F2P, it doesn't matter. I'll have it installed and play it here and there. As for TSW, I'm still subscribed and try to play it when I can, I am just going through a BF3 Hard-On at the moment, hahahahaha, I want to unlock the P90. As for GW2, u know my case. I will finish buying the CE for that awesome statue, but the game has been a let down so far for me. I'll probably enjoy the exploration in Pandaria more.

What did I fail to read? You've been foolishly claiming the subscription model is dead for the past 6 months is some thinly veiled attempt to justify why TOR doesn't suck and how it is simply just a victim of circumstance and a changing tide, so you find some half-assed article to "support" your pie-in-the-sky claim as proof or evidence.

What exactly am I missing?

Funny how the very first comment on that article pretty much agrees with me, too.

Funny how you choose to read what helps your argument and nothing else. I have been saying that the sub model is dead with nothing to do with SWTOR. We have seen big titles not able to keep the sub model before SWTOR. ToR is just another one of those big titles. Is the game as good as everybody thought it would be? No, of course not. I was expecting a bit more. Is the game as bad as everybody says it is? Nope, not either. It's a solid MMO that does some new things but copies too much from WoW. As for the article, that's the 4th-5th one I've posted with different professional reviewers saying that F2P is the future. If you don't like it, totally understandable, but don't deny it's how MMOs make money now.
