I have the choice of buying a PC with either 3 GB of RAM, a 2.4 GHz Quad Processor and a 512 MB 8600 GT, or a PC with 2 GB RAM, a 2.8 GHz Duo Processor and a 512 MB 8800 GT.

The second option is £40 more. Is the slight upgrade in graphics cards worth the money?

There's nothing slight about that upgrade, it's a huge step.

Let me give you some numbers. The 8600 has a memory bandwidth of 22.4gb/s and a texure fill rate of 8.64b/s. The 8800 has a memory bandwidth of 57.6gb/s and a texure fill rate of 33.6b/s. So is a card thats over 3 times faster worth an extra 40 pounds? Id think so. :)

The 8800 GT is vastly better. You'll see almost triple the framerate with a 8800 GT over a 8600 GT.

the 8600 gt is trash.. the 8800 GT is a very solid card..

Buying a 8600 GT would make you hate yourself for the rest of your life.

its basicly a 8600gt x 3-4. its not a slight upgrade but a big upgrade. crysis struggling on medium vs running great on high and ok on very high.

the difference between 2 and 3gb ram isn't very much for gaming but does make a difference for photoshop. for gaming and many apps that aren't video editing the faster dual core will beat the slower quad
