I recently ruined my laptop hard drive and need to replace it. My laptop already has some heat problems, so would getting a 7200 RPM replacement instead of a 5400 RPM be inadvisable?
Depends. My laptop right now has a 7.2k rpm hdd and it definitely puts off some heat. It really depends what you are doing. If you are playing a game it tends to get pretty hot, though I wouldn't rate it very high (you can feel it, but you won't be having to lift up your hands every now and then to cool them off or anything). It also depends on what your laptops shell is made out of. Mine being made out of metal it ends up probably a bit hotter then someone with lets say a plastic case.
