I dont really know but they wouldent make products that windows cant support, atleast windows 64bit especially if its a PC part

i read on a previous forum that it can support up to a terabyte. but like the guy before me said, theres only a mobo that supports 16gb. so yea..... but come on....theres no need for that kind of stuff...

technically vista needs 512mb of ram so 2 gigs will be fine and 4 gigs will be fine too, I dont know how to explain it better then that

wow....lets try this again...lol...it ACCEPTS a terabyte....ok? but motherboards only support 16gb(thx trooper for correcting me). so unless you desperatly need that much ram for what ever fetish you participate in, your gonna be fine....

theoretically speaking, a 64 bit os can address up to 16 exabytes of ram, but vista is capped. I believe that home premium can support 16 gigs max, and ultimate can support 128 gigs max, correct me if I am wrong.

i have 32 bit and mines detecting 3070mb of ram so over 3 gigs wonder if it would detect more?

18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes.

It might look big, but I bet it will be considered an average amount of RAM to have in XX years.

To clarify that magic number... The amount of ram an architecture supports is limited to it's memory adressing capability. A 32 bit instruction set has 32 bits with which to address memory blocks (which each hold a byte). Therefore a 32 bit machine can adress 2^32 different memory blocks which is 4,294,967,296 bytes. If you divide this number by 2^30 then you get your answer in gigabyes.

32-bit architecture supports 4 GB

With a 64 bit architecture you now have 64 bits for which to address memory. 2^64 is 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes. If we divide that number by 2^30 we have our answer in GB. Divde by 2^40 and we have terabyes

64-bit architecture supports 17,179,869,184 GB which is 16,777,216 TB which is 16 exabytes.

This isn't to say this is what windows supports as they probably have all kinds of limits and other allocations going on.

It doesnt matter if windows doesn't detect the RAM it will still run. Some PC manufacturers say that it may only say it has 4 when really it has more etc.

It only detects 4GB. If you have a video card with 0.5GB (512MB) of RAM, there will only be 3.5GB left.

Does the fact that xp not detect all 4 gigs or more really mean that all of the gigs of memory that a person instals are not being used? If my computer only see 3.2 gigs and I put 6 gigs of memory in it, is my computer using @ 6 gigs or is it using what it can see witch is the 3.2? What i am trying to ask is that just becuase it doesn't see it is it using all the ram i put in it?

Even if Windows correctly recognizes all the ram, doesn't mean it will fully use it.

For example, Windows 32-bit has a limit of 2 GB per process, meaning that a game won't use more than 2 GB , even if you 4 GB installed. Having more than 2 GB only allows other applications to run alongside the game without them taking up part of that 2 GB that could be used for the game instead.

how about this one. who has accualy put more than 4 gigs of ram in xp64 and that is being read by the system. and can send a picture of it. and also just like xp that stops @ 3.2 gigs on screen. someone should show a max of xp64 on screen. i think that would satisfy a lot of people.
