How much does a tech guru think it would cost to upgrade a PC to be totally optimized for the original FarCry... I had the game when it came out but my PC was too sh*tty to run it on full blast. The game was still fun as hell though, regardless of graphics. But I just felt like I was missing out on the full experience. Now that the technology is about 3 years old, I figure I could play it full blast for a pretty cheap price tag.

So what say you, Hermits? How much would it cost for all of that technology now? I'm hoping for a range between $75 - $150 (not including the game - I already own it)...

Oh, and BTW, I need to know if that game runs on 1440x900 resolution, or if I'll have to hook up the old 1280x960.....

I have enough RAM, HD space, disc drives and the lot, all I'm wondering about is a card and a processor. Last time I upgraded was 2003... and I've waited too long. I've got a 3200+ AMD Athlon processor, and Vision Tek XTASY 9600 (the card is old but it was pretty good in its day... no hating)

my 9800 pro ran it all on max without a stutter in sight. great card, sometimes i positively get the impression that its colours were richer and more alive that my x1950. i thought maybe i was just nuts but then i heard the same claims from others...

anyway, FarCry has lo maxsysreq's by todays standards, if that is your main/only desire  9800xt/x800xt/x859pe should be more than enough for you and well within your budget

your processor is probably fine. that video card is giving you the trouble. just get a nVidia 7-series or ATI x1000 series with 256MB and within your price range and you should shred that game to pieces. oh and the resolution thing. it should run fine on your current monitor even if its 1280x960... unless you really want that extra clarity on a smaller monitor : P.

For $40 more get this fella:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102061

This is the exact card I have. And it's wonderful. Every game available today runs 3o+fps all settings  maxed + native resolution (NO AA, though)

Mkae sure you get AGP or PCI, depending on what you have. You posted an AGP and another guy posted a PCI, so double check.

"Cons: The design of this card is very poor and does not provide enoguh cooling for the VRM's. They will overheat easily at stock setting. If you run ATI tool and cracnk the fan up to 100% all the time they last a bit longer but still crash eventually. Do not buy this product."

Are you trying to rip me off?

He needs AGP though, they tend to cost a little more.. Anyway that x1050 you linked is not a gaming card and way overpriced if you ask me. I'd suggest to look for a 7600 GT, should run farcry without problems. Here's one inside your budget.

Also check how much power any new graphics card needs to draw from your power supply. If you bought your PC off the shelf rather than pick the parts yourself you probably have a low power generic PSU that may not be capable of powering todays much more powerful cards. I found this out the hard way upgrading from a 9200 to a X1600.

The Radeon X1950 Pro (AGP or PCI-E) currently provides the best mix of price vs. performance, and as you've seen, can be found for about $150 -- and I agree, by the way, that one bad review is pretty much nothing to consider. It usually just means the person had a different hardware problem and wasn't smart enough to figure that out, or they did just happen to get a bad card, in which case it would have fallen under the warranty, so no big deal.

This is the card I got.

Been running fine for 3 months now. Make sure you got a good power supply. Here's the power supply I got and it's worth every penny.

Also you might re consider just upgrading your system to play that one game. If you save up anywhere between 700-1500$ in a few more months you can get a dual core system that can probably run Gears oF War when it comes to PC as well as Bioshock, Assasin's Creed, etc. All the great games you're going to want to play :).

besides the x1950, the next strongest ATI for agp is the x850pe. all the rest of the x1xxx serries fall behind it, although they do offer shader 3 support.

your next best option is the x850xt or x800xt, although even the 9800pro will give you ultra-smoothe performance in farcry at its most glorious maxed-out settings.

Or you could just forget about unreliable (in my experience) ATI cards and get yourself a Geforce 7600GS or 7600GT.  Theyre about 120-150, and they run great.

Sorry to hear your troubles with ATI products. Personally i had nothing but a delightful experience with my sapphire-9800 and with my current powercolor-x1950 as well, although im not strictly an ATI fanatic. my pervious machine hosted an nvidia Gforce3, which i was happy with while it lasted.

I go for the best offerings at the given time, and naturally, i can only make a recomendation based on my own experiences.

i never got the impression that ATI products were unreliable

Why did I even bother helping you if you were going to act like a [deleted]?

I told you what I got, showed you a product that was more bang for you buck, told you that I was having no problems with it, and you proceed to ask me if I was trying to con you? What's your problem?
