you could build a computer for $500 to run alot of games...hopefully you don't need a monitor.

try dell.com the xps 630 is really nice it's the one i have, not sure the base price though. but it comes with nice stuff without customization. of course, if you want to customize (which you should) then check out what they have. any questions post in the PC hardware forum.

umm, well its alot cheaper to build one. do you know anybody that knows how to build one or have a local pc repair shop? if you have either of those you could buy parts from newegg and have them help you assemble and configure it.

Its alot cheaper to build one, you should try and find someone that will help you put it together or just learn to do it. You'll save alot of money by not buying a prebuilt

I would reccommend building your own. But if you aren't comfortable with that, Newegg has some good pre-built computers on thier site. Like this one

Here get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103159

and add this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161252

Then your set for med-high settings on most games.

Here's some benchmarks of that video card:

If you ever want to find out the specifications of a computer enter the command promp, type into this "dxdiag" without the quotation marks and press enter. To get to the command prompt go into the start menu, then go to programs, accessories, it should be in this folder.

On ebay for a budget of $500 there are some very decent computers, several computers that were under $300 could play recent games such as GTA IV at the recommened level

CRT monitors are still good. My 22" lcd broke down and having trouble with crappy ACER company for repairs and my 19" crt is still a great monitor.

A good way to buy a computer and simple is to buy a pre-made and change the videocard and power supply but would probably cost a bit more than 500.
