Just curious to know how often people on here turn there PC off? Do you leave it on for months on end? A few days? or turn it off at the end of the night? Or After your done using it?

Just wondering what everyone usually does as far as that goes.

Almost never turn off my computer .. make restarts for updates to OS and other apps .. and full shut-downs only when I'm going to be away for more than a day.

My PC has probably been on since the summer, unless you count the numerous restarts I've had.

In my experience, PCs that are left running for weeks tend to be more sluggish than those turned off when not in use.

Follow up to the original question, why not turn the PC off when not in use? Is there any advantage to that? I think that it's a big waste of energy.

On during the entire day. Off during the entire night. The only exception to this is when I have 2gb+ download, then I leave it on during the night.

My guess would be that they don't have the patience to wait out the booting time.

I turn it off to conserve...some believe that turning on and off shortens the life of the components. I believe that the restarts only reduces the lifespan slightly. On the other hand constant heats also shorten the lifespan as well. Would you leave your TV on without watching it continuously for days or a week? I doubt it...

On in the morning and off at night, when I am not using it I'm running Folding@Home. I have one of those Nvidia GPUs that supposedly has a shortened life by constant cooling and reheating.

I'm not sure if I believe it, but I'd rather not have it die on me so take no risks.

Once or twice a month. It does get restarted for updates and drivers when needed. I shut it down and unplug it when I leave for vacations and the weekend.

Well, at least we know how many of us are actually paying our own energy bill... I turn mine off everytime I'm not using it. My energy bill seems to rely pretty heavily on my computer usage...

I'm with the everytime I'm not using it crowd. The always online and the energy thing are my main reasons. I've always done this and I've never had a problem.

I turn if off whenever I go away for more than an hour, so usually once or twice a day. I don't want to hurt any of my parts or possibly have a fire started when I am not here to put it out.

My gaming rig (that I'm using now) uses about 400W of power when not running any games (700W when it is) so I only keep it on if I'm using it or leaving it for less than 10 minutes. Otherwise it's switched off to save money on the electricity bills, on the plus side though I could use the thing as a heater (my graphics card is Overclocked plus I don't think my 3Ghz Quad Core helps with this much) during the winter time =p
