I rarely shutdown the one that I have now, but I will be getting a new one soon and I was just wondering what you guys do.

Do you shut it down nightly or do you keep it running for days?

Which is the safest and best option?

It's probably better to shut your computer down everyday before you go to sleep because then you clear all your temporary files that have been building up during the time it's on and if you are running windows it allows it to update it's software.

As for me I always put mine into hibernation mode and maybe turn it off 3-4 times a week.

I just put mine to sleep whenever I won't be using it for more than an hour or so, and only turn it off if I'm leaving for more than a day or two.

I rarely shut mine down as I use it for my work. At most, maybe only three times a month.

There used to be a big debate about this kind of thing. Some said that the more you shut it down, the harder it was on the equipment. Others said that the longer you let it run, the harder it was on your equipment. Since, the equipment is made so that you can shut it down every day and be just fine.

I'm not sure there is a "right" answer, but personally - I shut mine down every couple of days or so. I clean it (inside dust) once a week. My house is a steady 76° and my case is well ventilated, so I don't have to worry about heat.

So... yeah. That's my take. :)

I shut my PC down almost everyday, except if I have a big download. I have a few LED's so leaving it will ruin my sleep XD. It's probably good to shut it down to cool it down, and to erase temp file on memory. But there's probably days where you should leave it on too though for virus scanning, defrag, updates etc...

Every day if not you must have a cooling system really good. When the computer is on and working a lot starts getting really hot, at some temperatures the components start missing the internal "gap" band and they fail and there is no repair for it. So if you don't need to use it turn it off, if you are downloading all the time check the temperature but let the PC rest a time after the download is very simple

Shut it down when you're not using it. Save yourself the grief that is your energy bill.

Doesn't that defeat the point of having the surge protector :?

I shut mine down every day usually. If not every day, then every other day.

I use to leave my computers on for weeks and months on end, but i dont see a point in doing that.

No, I shut it down by click the "start" first, once it turns off, I then turn off the surge switch. ...I learned that from work, it's about saving the energy, even if your PC monitor's off it still consuming electric power.

Shutting it down wont clear any of your temporary files. You have to delete those manually. Also, Windows wont update while its shutdown. It needs to be powered on in order to download updates and only needs rebooted to finalize initialization of the downloads. To answer your question, if you are getting a new build that uses a silver based thermal compound, you have to power cycle the paste in order for it to seat properly for at least the first 200 total hours of use.

By power cycling I mean to leave it on for a day straight then shut it down every time you get done with it for a couple days then leave it on for another 24 hours and keep cycling between shutting it down and leaving it on for about 2-3 weeks and you will be good.

If you run a lot of games and applications you should restart or shut it down once in a while because of memory leaks. This means that some apps can take memory without giving it back to the system. Though memory leaks are typically small they can add up over time. Games are usually the worst offenders because they are very complex applications that are often shipped without throrough testing.

I shut it down before bed and whenever I am not using it for long periods of time. This is especially good if there's a thunderstorm going on and you have a surge protector that way nothing funny happens.

Plus shutting it down helps you save power usage and money, and the environment.

I'm always shut down the PC when i'm leaving the PC for long period time and i'm don't use standby mode because it will uses energy and sometimes the unsaved data will be lost. Shutting down will cool down your PC hardware inside and it will save your energy.

The one aspect of shutting it down during thunderstorms that most people miss is you need to unplug at the very least your cat5/ethernet cable from the back of your pc. If you do not, your dsl/cable modem will pick up ESD and actually use the cat5 as a ground because it has the least resistance. I've seen it a thousand times.

When running things like a quad core and a 4890 on a 22" monitor, I hit the sleep button on my keyboard whenever I leave the room. Stops all my fans and draws nearly no watts. Monitor takes longer to wake up than computer :) With a sleep button on keyboard, it takes the extra 5 seconds total, but saves money in electricity.
