I rarely shutdown the one that I have now, but I will be getting a new one soon and I was just wondering what you guys do.
Do you shut it down nightly or do you keep it running for days?
Which is the safest and best option?

It's probably better to shut your computer down everyday before you go to sleep because then you clear all your temporary files that have been building up during the time it's on and if you are running windows it allows it to update it's software.
As for me I always put mine into hibernation mode and maybe turn it off 3-4 times a week.
I usualy shut it down whenever i'm gonna be away from it for awhile and when I go to bed, so a couple times per day I guess.
There used to be a big debate about this kind of thing. Some said that the more you shut it down, the harder it was on the equipment. Others said that the longer you let it run, the harder it was on your equipment. Since, the equipment is made so that you can shut it down every day and be just fine.
I'm not sure there is a "right" answer, but personally - I shut mine down every couple of days or so. I clean it (inside dust) once a week. My house is a steady 76° and my case is well ventilated, so I don't have to worry about heat.
So... yeah. That's my take. :)
Every day if not you must have a cooling system really good. When the computer is on and working a lot starts getting really hot, at some temperatures the components start missing the internal "gap" band and they fail and there is no repair for it. So if you don't need to use it turn it off, if you are downloading all the time check the temperature but let the PC rest a time after the download is very simple
I shut it down everyday or when Im not home. and I turned off the surge switch too when Im at work.DogswithgunsDoesn't that defeat the point of having the surge protector :?

Rarely, because i fold when i'm not gaming on it, with Vista and 7 i noticed i go could longer without it getting "bogged down" like XP used to and i would have to restart. No, I shut it down by click the "start" first, once it turns off, I then turn off the surge switch. ...I learned that from work, it's about saving the energy, even if your PC monitor's off it still consuming electric power.
Shutting it down wont clear any of your temporary files. You have to delete those manually. Also, Windows wont update while its shutdown. It needs to be powered on in order to download updates and only needs rebooted to finalize initialization of the downloads. To answer your question, if you are getting a new build that uses a silver based thermal compound, you have to power cycle the paste in order for it to seat properly for at least the first 200 total hours of use. It's probably better to shut your computer down everyday before you go to sleep because then you clear all your temporary files that have been building up during the time it's on and if you are running windows it allows it to update it's software.

By power cycling I mean to leave it on for a day straight then shut it down every time you get done with it for a couple days then leave it on for another 24 hours and keep cycling between shutting it down and leaving it on for about 2-3 weeks and you will be good. It's probably better to shut your computer down everyday before you go to sleep because then you clear all your temporary files that have been building up during the time it's on and if you are running windows it allows it to update it's software.

It does not hurt your PC to turn it off and on every day. Do you self a favor turn it off and flip the surge protector switch to save some money.
If you run a lot of games and applications you should restart or shut it down once in a while because of memory leaks. This means that some apps can take memory without giving it back to the system. Though memory leaks are typically small they can add up over time. Games are usually the worst offenders because they are very complex applications that are often shipped without throrough testing.
I shut it down before bed and whenever I am not using it for long periods of time. This is especially good if there's a thunderstorm going on and you have a surge protector that way nothing funny happens.
Plus shutting it down helps you save power usage and money, and the environment.
The one aspect of shutting it down during thunderstorms that most people miss is you need to unplug at the very least your cat5/ethernet cable from the back of your pc. If you do not, your dsl/cable modem will pick up ESD and actually use the cat5 as a ground because it has the least resistance. I've seen it a thousand times.I shut it down before bed and whenever I am not using it for long periods of time.
