It's a pretty nice rig but it is outdated.  Tis the world of PC computing and something I face in a harder reality as a converted notebook gamer.  The main thing missing is "what are you trying to play?" That determines what level of obsolesence we are facing.  A single 5870 is a great match for the i7 920.  The reality is that the 920 is pretty old and CPU's will last a long time.  That CPUs time has come and you could see that in games like BF3, Crysis 3 and GTA IV which are quick examples of games benefiting from beefier i7s.  So I would definitely think a new Mobo/CPU is needed (I won't recommend any until you figure out what you need to game for).  Since you are upgrading those, you definitely should get about 16gig of ram.  That will last a good while for gaming purposes in the future; any more than that is just overkill.  I would get the best single solution GPU you can afford finally.  However I would not just upgrade the GPU and leave the CPU as that is a bit too weak to compete with current high level games and definitely next gen games.  So definitely start with the basics.  I am not familiar with your PSU but if it is a good 750watt, then that should be plenty to carry over as is your case, HDDs and other components.  So a mobo/ram/cpu/gpu upgrade will get you set right.  If you plan to SLI/CF your next upgrade, then I would definitely look into PSU with a good 1000watt rating.  Good luck.

It's not all that bad in the grand scheme.  If it we're mine, I'd overclock the CPU, invest in a new GPU and perhaps a SSD.  If you're looking to upgrade what's you're budget and we can give you  path...

Damn. I thought the only thing that would need to be swapped is the graphics card. Even if I overclock the i7 to 4 GHz, it won't be good enough?

This is exactly what I was going to say.

If you OC your CPU and get a new GPU (AMD 7950/GTX 760 or better), you should be all set for a couple more years.  An SSD isn't necessary, but it would be nice.

Yea, I think I'll just upgrade the GPU. I can't believe the i7 920 is outdated already. Damn.

An i7 920 overclocked beyond 3 ghz is more enough for modern gaming. Your system may be outdated like all setups after a period of time, its still very adequate to do the job. If your able to get that i7 to near 4 ghz your golden for another couple of years. 6gb is still enough for most tasks and games. The only thing you may have to worry about is the gpu's VRAM.

LOLOLOLOL at ppl saying its time to replace a core i7 920 :P my core i7 780 is still a BEAST for gaming. dont switch up do yourself a favor and pocket the money. switch the dual 5870's for a single 7870XT or gtx 760. that should do you for a while

like omg seriously.. people get a core i5 2500k/3570k and they think its the next coming of jesus or something. pro-tip their blurayhidef

the enxt gen-consoles use a cpu compareable to a core 2 quad q6600 (stock) (used to theuir fullest potential) maybe if they refine it to no end it will rival a phenom II x4 945 (stock). keep your cpu for a while yet you will laugh at how stupid a purchase a new cpu is right now.

until 12k resolutions are the norm intel has a rather poor problem. they will hit a preformance wall on improving their cpu's any in gaming. as engines move more towards milking the gpu for everything. i wouldnt be suprised if we see a day where the gpu does everything for games and cpu does NOTHING

A 7870XT or GTX 760isnt really an upgrade from Crossfire 5870's only memory. Those jaguar cpu's in those consoles only have 6 cores free for gaming, It will take all eight cores at 1.6 ghz to match an Athlon 2 X4 at 2.8 ghz. Since they have only 6 cores available Any modern quad core above 2.4 ghz will be just fine.

yes thats true but the 760 or 7870xt will be far more stable and have more up to date and better quality drivers. amd stopped providing more than bug fix support to the 5000 series shortly after the dx10 and down cars were dropped down a well support wise.

the most he will have is minor support fixes n stuff

Your computer is mostly fine.  The 920 is still a decent CPU for gaming, your graphics card is a little bit weak.

Personally I would try to play games before you upgrade anything.

Fixed.

If you can overclock your CPU a little bit then the only thing needing replacing is the GPU. Your powersupply/case are good, 6GB is plenty of ram, and the i7 920 is still a very nice CPU (clock for clock its faster than the next gen consoles CPU).

If you live in the states then the best deal for GPU is the 7950 boost (its been frequently on sale in the low $200s). You can buy one, overclock it to 1000-1050mhz without messing with the volts and have a GPU twice as powerful as the ps4's (not shabby for $200-220).

I would upgrade that GPU. The CPU can hold a few more years, especially if you OC it. Dunno how the heatsink you have for it is.

It's still a great PC. The i7 is still a good CPU, especially if you overclock it.

A new GPU could help you in games though, and a SSD could help applications run faster.

OC the CPU and either get a 7950/670 or wait for the new AMD cards.

You really shouldn't be talking (I've been you post garbage regarding basic PC knowledge in systemwars). My 920 is still holding in there...although my system was struggling with one portion of SR4 yesterday (turned it down to 'High'...problem solved).

With a beefier graphics card and some overclocking, you'll be fine. An SSD would just be icing on the cake.

I got a i7 920 as well OC'ed to 4.2ghz. Makes a massive difference going from 2.6ghz. A GTX 760 is really all you need to up to speed maxing most games. My GTX 760 SLI upgrade has got me able to max out all brand new games without a hiccup. The i7 920 was an amazing CPU and still stands toe to toe with the new CPUs when theyre at stock. I probably dont plan on a brand new full system upgrade until late 2014/early 2015. By then my PC will have been 6 years old. It would still be plenty capable of medium-high graphics settings so I'll probably pass this down to my little brother to get him into PC gaming.

OC that to about 3.4Ghz, ram is fine, unless you can get 6 more since its triple channel, really the only thing that you would need is a GPU. You should get a beefy GPU that you can sli/cf in the future then let's say in a year upgrade mobo and cpu then maybe later down get another GPU. Try to get a GPU from the upcoming series ATI or nvidia, choice is yours. Also recommend a SSD worth every penny.
