A friend of mine gifted me Dead Space through Steam and i'm easily scared. How scary is it?

Dead Space is a fantastic game. But overall it doesn't have a whole lot of scares. The one thing that dead space does right is set up a relentless dreaded atmosphere that can leave you vulnerable and exhausted. The controls are not as bad as people say it is because it adds to the immersion of being helpless. DS is a survival horror, not a fast paced shooter. If DS had fast paced game mechanics i think it would make the game worse. People who complain about the controls are just not used to third person perspective games.
And before anyone flames me, i have beat the game on both the 360 and the PC, so i have a good idea on how DS plays on the those platforms
It was scary to me at first, then I just remained tense the whole way through, it's a shame they don't put more effort into trying to scare you, they were creative at the start of the game, then it ended up too predictable with less flickering lights and you being heavily armed, goes against being a surival horror.
Its not scary.
Unless you like jump scares, its not going to scare you at all.

Games can't be scary.

It's not scary at all. But somehow I sense you'll still be scared by it. Karl319I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with all of you. It depends on each person of course, and how much you get into a game. I played it at night, with headphones on medium to loud, and my lights off. I had to STOP playing for a week cause of how much it scared me.... Other people play it by day, lights on, the stereo playing music etc etc so it's not the same immersion feeling. It's like going to the movies compared to watching the same movie on a small screen in your kitchen...
I didn't find it really scary, only very ****** up and grotesque. In a good way. The scares, few as they are, are more of the I can't believe this happens! variety, at some points I was just stunned and didn't know how to react. Either that or had a panic attack, lol. It has amazing production values, very imaginative design, one of the best end levels ever and a great story. And the black dude from 300 and Spartacus. The boss fights... holy ****!
right, Ill put it like this:
Dead space is not scary, but it does give you those shock moments (or monster-jump-out-infront-of-you shocks)
But really scary? naaa, I often point out that games can not be truely scary when you have a frikkin armory at your disposal ^^
kinda-monster"booh im an evil grotesque thing" -player *click* "good bad Im the guy with the gun"
So scary? no, mildly tense? yes, cheap shock effects? yes.
But with the tools at players disposal it does never really get scary.
very many cheap scares that i will not spoil becuase they are funny once u see how the devs got you. BUT whatever u do, start on easy becuase well on normal and hard, u have nothing as in ammo or health replenishers, they under stock u and on easy they overstock you. so beat it on easy first then go back and get those steam achievements for hard.
[QUOTE="Eneru112"]Err... why?Games can't be scary.

Games can make the player actually fearful, just as movies can do the same to make the viewer actually fearful.
not just shock/jumpy moments.
and nobody is scared of nothing... everyone is fearful of something, thats one thing that is TAUGHT in just about every "corner" of the world. In order to not have fear, you must not have emotion.
I found the game quite scary and alot of fun, loved it. I found the atmosphere so immersive that i really got into the game. [MINOR SPOILER} There was one part where an invincible creature is chasing you near these sliding bookcases, i felt absolute panic lol.
I loved it and thought the Game as a whole was pretty scary, but I also felt that the first half was alot scarier than the second half for reasons best left found out. I thought the atmosphere was incrdible and the story was very enjoyable! I played and beat the game on both the 360 and PC and loved both! I alsoplayed in the dark with headphones as well for maximum immersion. The first night I played it was storming like hell outside and I had my Damn tree banging against my house, really made for a creepy gaming session,,,,especially when my cat attacked my feet as I was being attacked by a Necro ;)
Yeah the scary part is if you can take only a few hits and have to worry every now and then if a monster hits you from behind or grabs you and stab your back repeateadly.Extremely, to me. But it's also REALLY FUN. Tip: If you see a "dead" necromorph on the ground, shoot it.
And if you're really easily scared, play on easy. You take loads of damage, whereas enemies take maybe two shots from a non-upgraded plasma cutter.

It's got its moments, but the scary moments are pretty much only "jump scares" as lots of people already said. Compared to Silent Hill or Undying for example, Dead Space is not scary at all. And since you get pretty much the same kind of scares through out the whole game, you'll be immune to the scaryness pretty soon.
too scary enough for my nephew, when startled he pushed the monitor backward and it felt and got broken. I had to replace my LCD the next day
its scary nuff to keep u jumping all the timeA friend of mine gifted me Dead Space through Steam and i'm easily scared. How scary is it?
