I heard someone say that they wouldn't "touch Windows Vista with a 10 foot pole" That was almost a year ago.

Im thinking of buying a new rig but I dont know if Vista is secure enough. Could anyone in here share some insight on this topic. Is it worth the risk(ifVistavulnerable) for DX10? Thanks in advance for any help.

Haven't had a lot of problems, actually, I prefer it to XP now. And, it's only getting better.

Actually, I've had zero problems. It may have a few quirks, but it works fine and runs decent too.

While there are some valid reasons to hold off switching to Vista, security ain't one of them. Vista was built from the ground up considering security better than NT based OSs like XP. In fact one common complaint about Vista is that security is overdone and (by default) you're asked to review and approve too many activities.

Things like security. bugs, and drivers are largely caught up by this point. As the previous poster said you're not likely to run into any more trouble running Vista than XP these days with current applications.

The two still valid reasons to stick with XP:

1. XP runs significantly faster than Vista on identical hardware. Vista can do DX10 which XP can't so its up to you whether frame rate or eye candy is you're priority.

2. There are some old games and legacy apps that won't run under Vista. If you have some old favorites you can't let go, do a little research before switching OSs.

Vista has been 100% rock solid for me and I have never had a virus or anything like that. You need to have very good hardware to run it though. Vista uses close to 1gb of RAM in memory compared to 250mb XP uses and it dumbs down the gaming performance quite a bit when compared with XP. Vista runs great only if you have high end hardware.

I think UAC is one of the best features of Vista since I prefer to have complete control over my computer. In windows XP all applications have admin rights and that is how junk sometimes end up on your PC. In terms of security it's a lot more secure than XP.

I think Vista has a lot more going on than just DX10 which is imo at the bottom of the list when it comes to new features.

Security is the only real area in which Vista is actually better than XP....

but it also seriously gets in the way a lot of the time.
