Everytime i play games i get the annoying "atikmdag display driver not responding but recovered" error. It doesnt completely boot me from the game, but the entire screen freezes for like 10 seconds. Vary random. Can happen 3 times in a minute or 3 times in 5hrs.

If you google thid (for those note familar with it) it is an ATI error (the one I listed) and Nvidea has a similar one (different name though). Primarily it seems to be a Vista driver and there is more or less no known, reliable fix. All drivers are updated and bios is flashed. The only real solution seems to be XP that I have heard, so, with that said, anyone vouch for XP 64 ( i have 4 gig DDr2 ram so i need the 64 version)

I have heard the drivers for xp64 are worse, and it isn't based off xp32, but the server edition. Don't know for sure, its just what I have heard. Typically, those errors come from bad memory. Once I got new memory (even though mine passed memtest), my nvlddmkm.sys went away.

You would be a fool to get XP 64bit over Vista Vista 64Bit....mainly because the xp version has vitually zero driver support.

XP 64bit is meant to be pathetic against Vista 64bit mainly due to numerous driver related issues.

I use Vista 64bit for gaming and it's exactly the same as Vista 32bit, and performs excellently! No driver errors whatsoever either.

Last time I used XP64, it was horrible. I have heard it has gotten better, but Vista 64 is very good and stable. I have been running it for over a year now with no real issues.

I went straight from XP 32bit to Vista 64bit and i have not had a single driver problem for about a year now! trust me go for vista if you need 64bit!

Vista is pretty memory heavy, which is why you would notice the error while gaming on vista rather than xp. You should really attempt memtest or contact your video card manufac. to see if they have any software solutions before you have to mess around with your hardware (or before you attempt to install a sub-par operating system). Nvidia had many hotfixes that attempted to stop video driver crashes in vista

whats a good memory test to run?

That said, it seems like XP64 is pointless to do. Say I run memtest and it comes back fine, would XP 32 be a solid way to go then? It wont regonize all 4 gigs correct? There is no software or w/e fix for this. Ati / Nvidea say it is Vista 64, microsoft doesnt recognize the error as being theirs. If you are bored, google it. Pages upon pages of it, many dating back over a year ago.

Some say if you use just 1 stick of memory it fixes it. I refuse to do that. Other say it is a heating issue and to mess with fan speeds. Theories and ideas are all over the place.

Only real consistant thing is that Vista uses a ton of memory and messes around with power usage alot more than other OS and that XP switching fixes it.

Neither way is bad. As for the guy who said XP 64-bit having no driver support, he really doesn't know what he is talking about. Windows XP-64 bit and Windows Server 2003 64-bit both have the same support.

You would go wrong with neither, but since XP support will eventually be discontinued (Probably 2010 or so) it wouldn't hurt to either stay as Windows XP 32-bit, vista 32-bit, vista 64-bit. You could wait for Windows 7 and from what I hear about the early beta, its already about 15-25% faster, and this is running with only 1gb of RAM.

Also keep in mind if the product is not SPECIFICALLY designed for 64-bit, you will not get any boost whatsoever.

I don't know about xp 64 bit but I use vista home-premium 64. I have yet to come across a game that has had troubles because of vista 64 bit. I have had problems before in some multiplayer on games but that was just because of the game not vista and was fixed very quickly with patches :).

Only issue I have had was with Vista x64 not letting you install non signed drivers. But this only affected RivaTuner, and it does not happen anymore..

Daytona_178 I noticed you condemned Norton Antivirus in your blog post. Mainly on how resource hungry it is... On previous versions of Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security I would agree with you, but now its much better.

I used to use Avast Professional which I bought after testing Avast Home for a year. I liked it a lot very intuitive program, detected all types of viruses and malware built into websites. The only reason I stopped using it was because it did not include a Full featured Firewall.

I started using the latest version Norton Internet Security after hearing good reviews from review sites. Most of the review sites praised it for losing most of the bloatware and using less then 15 megabytes of memory on average. I must say I agree completely with them, It uses almost as Little resources that Avast did by itself.
