Ghost Recon (very 1st one) is hands down the most realistic war game ever. The AI in the game is the best I have ever seen. It's like your playing against real people. They are not idiots that will run out and stand there waiting for you. They take cover, they flank you, they will wait for you to attack and advance if they have a strategical position. Also you can die from one shot, so you need to keep cover yourself.
Unfortunately the other GR games get worse.
But Ghost Recon is available on steam so try and pick it up. It looks a bit dated now but well worth the money.
Its another R6V. Its a very action oriented game. Some cool new mechanics were added, but a far cry from the original series. However I still reccomend you check it out, its a lot of fun. IF you want tactical everyone raves about ARMA II although perhaps a bit too tactical for some.
Yeah, i know about ArmA II , unfortunately, it is an unoptimized piece of garbage lying about it's system requirements, sort of like crysis. Its another R6V. Its a very action oriented game. These guys are right. The original Ghost Recon is the only one worth playing from that series, if your looking for something tactical and semi-realistic. Your also right about Arma 2 being unoptimized and them lying about they're specs. (i meet the requirements but the game stutters like crazy, even with the graphics turned down)
You should def try Operation Flashpoint:Cold War Crisis (get the game of the year edition with the expansions) It's amazing. Google it and read about it.
Also Rainbow 6 Raven Shield, Rogue Spear and the original R6. Once UBIsuck started making them instead of the old Red Storm Entertainment, they turned into piles of steaming ****.
GRAW 1 and 2 are quite tactical, and the pC version has the added benefit of a tactical map, allowing you to move each teammate as you see fit. It is very fun to put your sniper up on a nice perch, move your heavy gunner to a point that covers the entire field, and then sweep the area with your third squad members while being covered.
Its a very cinematic game as well, with a lot of good action, memorable moments, and more. The setting (Mexico, iirc) is also quite interesting.
As far as realism, I wouldnt go that far, but its definitely "realistic" in that it is fairly challenging, easy to die, and portrays near-future technology in a fairly realistic manner

Raven Shield is a product of Ubisoft and not RSE.
