I know nothing of building computers, I am just a guy who enjoys playing video games.
With that in mind, I need the of the community here to build a computer. My current computer is 5 years old and I couldn't begin to tell you its specs (unless you'd care to tell me how I check that), so obviously it's high time I got a new one.
As implied in the title, I want a computer that will be able to run Assassin's Creed Unity (I LOVE the AC franchise), but obviously I don't want my computer to be limited to that game.

Bottom line: I would like anyone who can to give me at least general tips/instructions for going about building a solid gaming computer, that can run, among other games, ACU.

Thank you

AC Unity is a mess, even the highest end card has problems running it. I would not build a computer solely on trying to run that game. But I see that you have that covered.
You will need to post a budget for this computer though. I'm going to help you out and move this to the correct board. :)

I would never recommend a console but if your sole purpose is ac unity then an x1 is your great option.

it cheaper than the ps4 without kinect

A system with an intel i5 , 8gb of ram and at least a GTX 760 or AMD 280.

If your not willing to build your own or have someone you know do it then this prebuilt will do the job LINK

This game does have more NPCs on screen than any other released title that I have ever witnessed so I could imagine even a strong CPU will be in a bit of a pickle, paired with a strong GPU as well.

Then you have the issue with optimization in this case. Ubisoft even openly admitted and they said they are working on it. They even provided an update to remedy some technical difficulties. Not sure how it runs now, but I can imagine far from optimum.

AC: Unity is the best looking AC game. It uses advanced lighting compared to last-gen, and other goodies. But like I said, there are just tons of NPCs on screen. It's pretty ridiculous. So much going on.

Even if you have the latest GPUs like the GTX 970, 980, you'll have to be patient for the developers to iron out the technical difficulties and hope the maturity of the video drivers will give you a smooth running game sooner than later.

"barely run" lol

My 780ti gets 40-60 fps at max settings with FXAA in 1080p.

Whatever you do, avoid MSAA and TXAA in this game, they're no good AA methods for this game and FXAA actually works decently (it seems to have some temporal AA features, definitely no regular FXAA)

@PredatorRules said:

The console version runs at 1600x900 and 15-30 fps with the average often hovering around the 25 fps area and a very blurry AA method. He could settle for that of course, for 400 bucks that's pretty good....

The enthusiast entry level 750ti coupled with a decent CPU does slightly better than that, but might be limited to lower texture settings because of the 2GB VRAM.

@topic:

We don't know your budget, but I would suggest:

-A strong intel CPU as a basis for a future proof gaming PC that will handle even more CPU bound games well (I'm not too familiar with the newer models, but my i7 3930k is a beast. Someone else can probably point you to a specific model)

-A 970 GTX (~$330) however this card will not handle all modern games at their maximum settings with 60 fps at 1080p. I'd definitely recommend a card with a minimum of 4GB VRAM at this point, just to be safe with future games. You might want to wait a bit to see what AMD has in stock for their 300 series.

-At least 8 GB RAM (doesn't have to be very fancy. RAM does very little for the performance)

A PC built around these kinds of components should get you 30-60 fps in AC Unity at 1080p at max settings with FXAA.

Edit: I should also mention that the 970 GTX will easily handle all games far better than the PS4 or Xbox One. You didn't say what settings you're okay to play at and what framerates you feel comfortable with. My suggestion are for max settings and 40+ fps

lol wut?

the GTX 970 crushes every game currently out, and will continue to do so at 1080p for a while. one GTX970 is plenty for 1080p60 gaming.

Not if he wants locked 60 fps 95% of the time. Look at Far Cry 4, AC Unity, Dragon Age Inquisition or Ryse for example. These games are an indication how 8th gen only ports might run in the future.

Granted most of these are Ubisoft ports, but he clearly said he's interested in AC Unity specifically

R9 280 barely runs this game on medium settings on 30fps with drops to 15fps, so 750ti wouldn't run this game at all on medium. - try lowest.

Also don't know what settings you're gaming on, but it's clearly not max settings because GTX980 barely runs it on 46, GTX970 runs it on 40 and it's better than the 780ti:

@PredatorRules A780ti is faster than a 970 GTX and I have a overclocked version. Asus DC2 OC.

According to this benchmark a 750ti gets 26 fps average with very high quality in 1080p. Well above the PS4.

As I said I get 40-60 fps at 1080p with FXAA and everything on ultra with forced AFx16, including the Nvidia features like PCSS and HBAO+

There's no way it's possible true, all over the forums and I know for sure that 2x Titans couldn't run this crap well.

Also don't forget you're running this benchmark with 5960X - a 1000$ CPU might be boosting here stuff.

What could i possibly gain from lying about this -.-

Here's a video i made after it came out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2lZT-fb5I8&list=UUrtBcrjmcT37hiW35ePOeww

I know textures are only at high in this video, but i've increased them to ultra after that and it still runs fine, I could make another video if you really care so much.

Edit: About the CPU:

i5 2500k seems to be enough for above 60 fps

Building your own PC for the first time has a lot of potential for a bad user experience unless your just really wanting to learn and problem solve. For a good Unity experience...providing some upcoming patches, and assuming you're wanting the visuals that many people are posting of the PC version, you will probably want to go high end. Intel i7 CPU and 970 GTX.

If you're not mechanically inclined, you may want to check out sites like Ibuypower.com, CyberpowerPC.com, digitalstormonline.com or even OriginPC.com. Browse those sites and check some prices and specs. Really it just depends on how good of graphics and frame rates you want but Unity pushes hardware pretty hard, especially until they get all the bugs fixed.

I'm no expert here but to own a 1000$ CPU or even a 350$ one and a GTX970 that costs about 330$ + all the extra parts is not equal to a console that costs now 350$.

If it's for only 1 crappy ported game, I wouldn't even look at PC.

People seem to forget the console versions of this game are not running at max pc settings.

They are running at much lower settings.

I have 2 GTX 970s in SLI with an i7 4770k and I get around 70-80 fps avg at 2560x1440 with max settings aside from AA being FXAA.

I usually play with 2xMSAA with forced SMAA added and get around 55-60fps.

It's all about the budget, so far we're arguing here what's better for the OP - while we got no clue what's his budget limit.

Of course it's not equal. You'll get what you pay for, which is higher resolution, framerates and settings.

If he's okay with 1600x900 in lower settings and 15-30 fps and only one possible controlling method, by all means he could get a PS4, as i said for 400 bucks it's not bad and he'll have PS4 exclusives to look forward to.

If he's willing to spend a bit more he could easily surpass those settings and build a machine that will run all multiplats better than the PS4 and XBox 1.

It really comes down to what @crumblingaway wants and if he even would consider a console.

@RyviusARC That's awesome. SLI 970s is a great enthusiast combo and not too expensive considering their performance.

What makes them even better is that they can overclock by quite a bit without temps rising drastically.

I can get one card to 1600mhz and the temps only go up by 1-2C.

But in SLI I can only push around 1560mhz which is still great.

I rarely OC though, mainly because I don't need it.

Wow, thank you very much for all the suggestions. A lot of material to go over and I"m confident that with in taking into account all of your replies I will be able to build (or have someone build for me) a great computer.
For those who wondered, I am specifically interested in ACU, but it's just one game and I WILL get tired of it eventually, so obviously I wouldn't be building a computer for only one game.
Again, thank you :D
