You need very little prior knowledge to build a PC.

umm you run a few rubber hoses between point A & B in a methodical manor, and then you add some water to a small tank at the back and flick a switch.

you want a mroe clearer answer.. okay umm you setup your radiator at the back via screws.. you then run a hose through 1 of the two openings at the back or side of the case, next run it to your cpu then run a hose from there to your next water cooled device such as a gpu, then once your done rinseing and repeating this process your final one goes back outt he case via the second hole and into the rad, you add water, or coolant, or johnsons baby oil (im serious)

  1. Read this sticky
  2. Read these blogs (includes video)
  3. Visit this external sticky (particularly the "Sweet Spot" builds sticky and "What should I build/buy?")

Good luck with your new build!

I've never taken any computer classes ever, and I literally just fired up my first build on Tuesday and it works beautifully. Just learn about compatibilities and get a good screwdriver set. Both my motherboard and my case came with general assembly instructions, and while details may differ depending on your build, the order of operations is the same.

Building a PC is extremely easy, I just made mine not too long ago without any experience beforehand. The manuals that came with the parts were very useful, and I did watch some tutorials on youtube, which were very helpful.

Have you ever played with Lego as a kid?

Building a PC is even more simple than Lego if you have the correct parts.

This is how I mostly do it but it can vary a little from case to case :

  1. Make sure to have the correct parts for it.
  2. Mount the Motherboard distance(s) on the motherboard tray inside the case, if additional case fans are intended to being used this is the time to mount them.
  3. *Mount the PSU inside the case.
  4. Screw/mount the HDD(s) in the case.
  5. **Mount the CPU in the socket on the motherboard.
  6. Mount Motherboard backpanel/plate/sheild (I/O sheild) inside the case.
  7. Mount/screw the motherboard inside the case. (Don't install the CPU heatsink/fan just yet)
  8. Connect cables to the HDD, Motherboard, Case and Fans. (4/8pin CPU PWR 12v+, 20/24pin MB ATX, case front/external cables incl. pwr and resset and opt. USB/firewire/Esata, Case fans onto the MB and/or 4pin molex, Sata II/III for HDD's, And the pwoer for the HDD's.)
  9. Fit the cooler for the CPU. (place a little dot of cooling paste with the size of a rice on middle of the CPU heatspreader, then mount the cooler.)
  10. Mount the ram modules in the correct slot's adviced from the motherboard manual. (to use dual/tri chanel conf. for the memory modules.)
  11. Insert the graphic card in the correct PCIe port.
  12. Connect the remaining cables. (such as PCIe pwr 6pin and or 8pin for the graphics.)

(* If the case is fairly large and has enough with space you can install this the last if you wish but cable routing is always easiest if you dont have any parts inside the case.)

(** Some Aftermarket coolers have a supporting backplate/bracket that need to be fitted BEFORE the motherboard goes inside the case.)

And cable routing, the simplest way to do it is haveing a look on the MB and knowing where the connectors will sit onto your MB so you can hide them the most, and draw the cables aprox. where they will be connected before you have to much stuff inside, unused cables is best to hide on the back of the motherboard tray, ziptie together cables so you get good airflow and good looks.

Make sure all cables are seated firm and correct.

Install Windows/linux/OSX or whatever OS you want to use.

If you want to do it carefull and have a great looking inside it can take a cuple hours to do. (YES! routing cables can be a pain in the butt!)

But if you dont care about how the internals look you can pull it off within the hour.

I'd agree with that analogy - take a handful of lego bricks and you have thousands of possible ways of putting them together. With PC parts there is very often only a single place you can connect it, and providing you did a bit of research before buying parts, it is a relatively simple affair to assemble it.
