I just bought a i7 920 with a gtx295 card. I am a newbie so please be very specific about what to do. how do I calculate fps for this game as well as empire total war, and what is the score that I want to reach realistically (also what resolution should I be playing at)?

is there any way to boost my fps?

i know next to nothing about computers, so don't think it is a good idea for me to overclock unless there is a VERY easy way to do so, like downloading a program that does it for me. do i need to overclock to get a high score, or does it not matter much? thanks

You always want to play at your monitor's native resolution for the best picture you can obtain. Using a different resolution then your native one can stretch/skew the picture and things may get cut off or just look wrong. I know Crysis has a benchmarking program for both CPU and GPU, but I'm not at home so I can't remember the file names to look for. If you simply want to check your fps in your games, download FRAPS and run it before you start a game. This will have your fps in the upper left corner (default location). There really shouldn't be any need to OC your CPU or GPU. Your computer should be able to play anything you throw at it with relative ease and you shouldn't experience any problems.

so I will know my fps BEFORE I run or open crysis, somewhere on the left upper corner of my desktop, if I run FRAPS? (I assumed I would know it in game, and it would be different for different games--some games would have a good fps and others not so much--I guess I was wrong) Thanks for your advice.

Any other comments please? much appreciated

and if someone can explain the crysis benchmarking in detail that he mentioned above so that i can do it, i would appreciate it.

i think there was a thread about a guy with similar configuration who was puzzled why his benchmarks in crysis were so low, I'd like to diagnose this in my own computer and make any changes for improvement

FRAPS is a background running program that operates while you play games. While you're gaming and FRAPS is running, you should see your fps listed in the upper left corner of your screen while playing a game. As for running the benchmark programs for Crysis, just from the top of my head I think you only need to access the directory that Crysis is installed to. So you should be able to open up your C: drive and then open your Program Files folder - from there you'd want to find the Crysis folder and open it. You should see a slew of files in there, but the benchmark ones are easy to spot. There is 1 that has GPU in the name and there are 1 (maybe 2) that have CPU in the file name. Whatever settings you are using in the game are the settings that these benchmarks are going to utilize, so make sure you have your game settings are where you want them to be.

It doesn't work like that, real life has motion blur.

uhh what's so funny? Real life does have motion blur, also the human eye can perceive differences up to 200+ fps....but 60 fps is the sweet spot 30 is ok, but feels somewhat sluggish even with motion blur

OMG - I guess you all don't get waht I'm trying to say. in RL - us humans see and average of 30fps. Yes, the human eye [and I stated this previously-when adrenaline kicks in] can see many more... So, at 30fos in RL, we don't see lag... Geesh...

Alright, first off you can't ask "How many FPS the human eye can percieve?" you should be asking "What is the shortest frame a human eye can notice?" The human eye can percieve around 18FPS as a fluid motion when motion blur is used to 'tween' the missing space.

In either case, the human eye doesn't pick up information like a video device. It processes a stream of information through the optic nerve. If you want to know more about frame rates, motion blur, and the human eye check out the link.

NO NOT THAT ONE!

How could you debate that this is false - or any of you?? If one of you were to work the inthe medical field - you may know a little more about the human body. How about some of you do a little research of how we persieve the world around us, and how fast a human brain can react.

So before you all decide to blast someone about human perception, how bout some of you kids learn a little bit....

First, the human brain doesn't perceive motion in "framerates." So obviously they don't "view at 30 fps."

Second, studies have shown that the human mind can perceive framerate differences in the range of hundreds of frames per second.

Third, there's also personal experience..I can personally tell when a game is running at 30 fps as opposed to 50+ ..especially in fast-paced games like first-person shooters or racing games.

I don't know everything, but I know more than enough to tell you you're wrong.

Exactly. For example, a dot or scratch on a frame of film can be easily spotted even when it is only around for hundredths of a second, yet we can easily perceive and understand motion from very very few frames per second. The eye works differently depending on conditions: brightness, fatigue, external interference. A low frame rate may bother you more with the lights on than without or vise versa. It's all relative. The human eye is far from a perfect machine.

And what are you basicing this medical perception from? And if we don'tview motion in framerates--then how is it measured? BTW, go read a little bit, and read what others had to say about it. Not just in gaming forums, but medical threads....

*facepalm* You can't measure human eyesight in framerate because the eyes do not perceive motion a series of still images. It is a persistent interpretation by the optical nerve, which you can read about via the link I posted above. When we view games/movies/animations we cannot show a continuously moving object because we are limited to displaying on a two dimensional surface with individual pixels made up of smaller three color points that display a color when balanced properly. The motion is an illusion created by your eyes tweening the various images themselves...

Majority of every video we watch cinema and so forth, is viewed at 30fps. Because anything over that is a waste..It would make no difference. Now when talking about gaming - thts a different story....
