i have had my pc for a while now and since i7 and ddr3 and new mobos are still kinda pricey. what if i just added a 5870 to my current setup? i currently have a q6600 cpu 4 gigs of ddr2 ram and a 8800 gtx. i like to play all of my games at 1920 by 1200. thanks guys!

Go for it, the Q6600 is still a great CPU if you push it to 3Ghz or more you wont "need" to upgrade the CPU for another year or so and 4GBs of DDR2 ram is perfect for gaming purposes I don't think we will "need" more for another 2 years.

Oh yeah go for it. I would say to make sure that you have a PSU to run it, but if you can do your current setup with it then I don't think you will have any problems. CPU is still good as wells as RAM. The new card is going to blow you away

You won't see the full potential of the 5870 with a Q6600.

Since you are gaming at 1080p why not go for the 5870 (the 8800gtx has become inadequate somewhat at that res). Then maybe in the future upgrade to a stronger CPU or give q6600 overclock (which you'll probably do knowing its a bottleneck). That or wait for 6 series cards and buy one with a new cpu?

it'll be great, but just for kicks, run that 8800 as a dedicated physx card. you might as well, they're pretty worthless sold second hand now and in physx enabled games it is nice.

Yea he needs to overclock quite a bit, but even then the Q6600 will be holding the 5870 back.

Make sure your case is big enough for the card. Most mid-towers will have a hard time taking a HD5870 in.

i have been looking at some youtube videos and a lot of them show ya how to overclock a q6600 from 2.4 to 3.0. so you just have to set the mulitplyer to 9x and something else to 333? i also have a evga 680i mobo. any suggestions? thanks

If he overclocks the Q6600 to over 3ghz he won't be seriously bottlenecking the 5870. Alot of people have gotten 3.2ghz+ out of their Q6600's on air. A Q6600 is still a very good CPU when it's at 3ghz or more.

At such a high resolution, yes.. you will notice a big performance boost in most games. However, your Q6600 will perform MUCH better, and your 5870 will be able to show itself off more if you overclock to at least 3ghz. It's nothing to be scared of as long as your motherboard BIOS allows overclocking.

Lol, it's fine, either way I don't think he'll be seeing under 60-50 fps in any modern game released so far. (Possibly even Crysis at modest settings along with GTA 4, Shattered horizon, which will still run great)

If it's OCed it's fine, most games don't even use a quad yet.

I wouldn't advice you follow step by step when it comes to overclocking. Overclocking has to be hands on . Most chips are different and what someone else gets might not always work with you.

Here is a very good guide on how to overclock:

http://www.cyb3rglitch.com/tutorials/Overclock-CPUs-RAM/

As for the OP: A 5870 and a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz will cause a bit of a bottleneck. I HIGHLEY suggest you try overclocking. It doesn't have to oc'ed much but getting it anywhere from 3 to 3.2GHz should help.

If not, go for the 5850 instead and overclock it a bit to get more juice to the 5870 standards.

Good luck!

OCed Q6600 wont hold that card back...not even close.
