My first rig I want to go all out save for the GPU which I only want to be competent... Are there any changes you guys would make? Also is there any other parts/cables I need (already have monitor KB/M, and case) or is this ready to be pieced together and just go?

CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6700

MOBO: Asus Rampage X48

RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR2 800

PSU: Corsair 650TX

HDD: Western Digital 640 gb

DVD: Samsung DVD Burner

GPU: VisionTek HD 4850

OS: Vista Home Basic

19" Samsung LCD... I also may hook it up to my 42" LCD if I want a bigger picture. But my main conern is missing a cable or something. is this all I need? And I have seen some how-to videos and youtube so I have an idea but:

Is it as easy as connecting the parts, inserting the OS disc, and go?

I'd get Home Premium instead of Basic, and probably invest in an aftermarket CPU cooler, but that machine is indeed ready to go. I might switch up the processor for one of the newer Q9k series chips if you really want to go high-end all around though.

What makes premium worth it over basic? I have seen some comparison charts and the only differences I saw were a couple of extra features. I have Premium on a laptop too, and don't use them.

Or are there some performace differences?...Thanks for the info

The Aero interface is one of the main ones. There are a few more little things, but well worth an extra $10 if you ask me.

I agree and it should be Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit if you want to be able to use 4GB of RAM. :)

I still think he should go with 64bit XP since it also can use 4GB of ram and plus it uses less ram than Vista. There's also a DX10 hack already out for Xp that allows DX10 on XP.

Link? Last I heard the only thing even remotely like that is the hack to force Very High settings for Crysis in Windows XP.

That doesn't seem entirely legal. Or workable, for that matter.

Pretty darn good since it's only in the Alpha stage and it works on a few games. I am sure by 2009 it should past the beta stage. If this does become successful there would be no reason to own Vista 64 unless you like it using more ram than 64XP.

i am still confused about this 32-bit and 64 bit vista thing. i read somewhere that if you go with the 64-bit you will have a hard time finding drivers and such. can someone explain what the difference between the two is?

The only real difference is the amount of Ram or memory you can use. The max with 32bit is 4GB, however you won't be able to use all 4GB of your ram since the graphic card also takes up the max amount of Ram allowed. If you have a 512MB card and 4 GB or ram you'll end up using 3.5GB of your full ram. Basically if you got 4GB of ram get 64bit Windows, there is also no difference between the Vista 64 and XP 64 other than Vista has DX10 and uses more ram to run.

Yes it's sometimes hard to find Drivers for your computer. All the 32bit programs work with 64bit since 64bit emulates 32bit to run them. The only drives you really need is for your mother board and graphic card which are very easy to find in 64bit. But it's a lot easier now days to find 64bit drives.

True and how ever all of the Vista as a problem with some compatibility with old software & stability
even with power-full computer it why some people rather buy a OEM Version of vista and keep there XP On hard Drive
difference of OEM & RETAIL window are Price by almost double the difference Retail having the crap microsoft support
Both work fine There is upgrade from xp & OEM DVD on newegg & TigerDirect.com you can put it with the old good XP
so if software failure you can still be on XP but only what id do.
I hope Window vista get Lot more stable so many people complain about it and soon window 7 By end 2009
i hope Window 7 is not another LEMON and that it work By lemon i mean It like you buy so-meting it look great but after few day or week you realise it just broken and it won't work as it said so :(

and if you sli or Tri sli more ram is needed also on vista 64 bits So having 4GB for. 1GB of memory. ect.
that true

I am not a fan of Vista in any way, infact I just ordered XP 64bit and I love it. 64bit operating systems dont just give you more RAM to handle, but they shoudl increase performance from timing and loading times, to frames per second and even graphically in games (FarCry).

Its going to take a few more years for things to really move onto 64bit. Games just started doing it in 2005, and programs aruond a year after XP 64bit was Golden you started tos ee more programs, games and applications using it.

If you want Vista grab it, I dont game on it, but use it for work and other things, I can not stand it myself.

There is nothing wrong with Vista other than it using a bit more RAM to be able to run applications.
