I was wondering if anyone knew if HP puts a certain type of RAM in their notebooks? I am having a notebook custom built and I found out that upgrading the RAM myself is cheaper than having them install it.

typically not, usually they will use pc2-4200 or pc2-5300 (ddr2533 or 677)

either or would probably be fine.

I have the nw8440 mobile workstation from HP and I added 1gb of PC2-5300 from a 3rd party brand (edge tech) and it worked just fine. Laptops even have a little hatch on the bottom to access just the slot for it; you don't have to open up the whole case or anything like that. My ram cost me only $45 which is probably a lot cheaper than what you were quoted.

Thanks everyone, I have decided to go with the PC5300. I would like to go with the 800 Mhz but I keep hearing that it won't run at that speed with HP notebooks so I will go with the one basically in the middle. I get to save even more money so I guess that can't be a bad thing.
