Hello,

I have spent the last week putting together this gaming pc (my first), I believe I have a decent price with decent parts, but any suggestions or corrections would be much appreciated.

CPU: Intel P4 Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
MOTHER BOARD: Asus P5WDG2-WS-Pro
RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2GB)
HD: Seagate 320GB SATA II 7200RPM
VIDEO CARD: Gainward GeForce 8800GTX 768mb
POWER: Thermaltake 750W
MONITOR: LG 20" Widescreen LCD, 5ms.
Plus. XP Home, Sound Card, Cooling Fan, Case, Wireless Keyboard & Mouse etc...

All built, tested and delivered for AUD$2,887.80

Thoughts?

Thank you.

Pre-built? Hmm.. where are you buying the computer from?

For around that price, that's quite a decent build, but the memory is a bit of overkill. You might be able to cut down on the cost slightly if you can order the parts and build it yourself - check out stores like MSY (no doubt the cheapest computer store)

If it had a quad core processor, then that will be really good.

If you want to really see a killer computer, search up this user named maxishine on Youtube, that person has a computer setup that only be dreamed of - spent around 9 grand in total for the entire setup.

Thanks - so you reckon 4GB is too much?

I am a TV editor who uses 8GB, so what is required and what is overkill is a bit blurry for me.

I want to be able to play the top looking games, would 2 or 3GB cover this?

I did check out MSY, it is without a doubt the cheapest. But I couldn't trust myself (despite all the help forums) to build it. I could see myself putting a screwdriver straight through my new CPU or crushing the ram as I click it into the motherboard! haha.

Ohh if your into video editing, then 4gb of RAM is perfect (sorry thought that you were only building a computer for gaming only)

Building a computer from scratch can be a scary task for the very first time - if you're not confident, try asking a friend if they can build it (thats if you have any friends that knows how to build a computer)

Well it's a personal pick - I'm planning to get a new computer built sometime this year and I'm getting a quad core processor (not just for gaming)

Ram is cheap as hell at the moment. Just go for the 4GB. You'll definitely want it in Vista.

Thanks.. I meant I am a editor at work (on a eight core mac).

But when I get home, it's only gaming!

I might keep the 4GB as for when the games come out using direct x, I will have to upgrade.

Thanks

Why do you have 4GB of RAM if you're running XP Home?  I think you'll only notice it if you're running 64-bit.

Great, I'll drop it down, and buy Vista later with the cash!

One thing. which RAM do I want? I am looking at Corsair DDR2, but what am I looking for, 3 x 1GB, or 1x1GB and 1x2GB?

Am I looking at the Mhz? The PC6400 bit?

Thanks for all the advice.

^depends if your planing on overclocking the **** out of that CPU then 2 x 1GB of ram is best other solutions like 1 x2GB of ram dont work so well for overclocking. Also I reccomend that you buy all the parts then pay a little extra for them to assemble it. prebuilt comps=waste of money. I also recommend you get a 22 inch 1680x1050 monitor for high resolution gaming. your GTX will be wasted at 1280x1024 resolution.

Thanks. I'll beef up the monitor a bit.

As for the RAM, I will not be over clocking, so I'll just get a 1GB and a 2GB - but which model of Corsair DDR2? There are so many!

Also, I am buying all the parts, then they are putting it togehter for me.

I've just upgraded the monitor to a 22" BenQ... so it's just the RAM now.

Which RAM do you suggest? For example, if I put these in, will it be any good?

1x Corsair 2GB TWIN2X2048-6400C5DHX (2x1GB) T2X2048-64C5DHX PC-6400 CL5
2x Corsair CM2X512A-6400 512MB XMS2 PC-6400 (800Mhz) RAM

^i'm envious of your money.

to the other guy about ram take the first option of 2x1GB at 6400. It will work better than 4x 512mb. and nice on the monitor enjoy your gaing rig, now all i have to do is get a job lol.
