Think about it:

it has only taken us around 30 years to come from pong to Crysis.

I have seen and played the game and with the right mods...it looks photorealistic in some places. Some may argue that it looks BETTER than real life e.g in the spaceship level.

I hope that developers achieve that goal soon because then we will be able to experience new graphics styles and other forms of gaming. Otherwise every game will be the same (graphically).

When we reach Photorealism I am sure that gaming will change drastically.

VR goggles perhaps? :P

your thoughts plz

20 years?!? Not even close.

Look at what we have now. The upcoming 9000 series of Nvidia GPUs is just around the corner. Look at Unreal Engine 3 and Crysis. Probably in 2-3 years we will be at the point where it would be very difficult to tell the difference without close scrutiny.

And I doubt gaming will "change drastically" once we reach that level. Games will still be games but just look better.

Maybe after we have photorealism for a few years, but since devs only care about optimizing graphics... they leave out what makes a game fun (Decent Story, Fun Gameplay, Etc).

I haven't heard of any new games that are comming out which use the Crysis engine... I don't see any reason to upgrade to a 9xxx unless I wanted to turn my room into an oven.

Well look at it this way! Movies are photorealistic, right? Whether a movie sucks or not is pretty muh determined by the director! Therefore, as games progress graphically, sound, art direction, story, acting will be paramount, just like they are in a movie!

We have a long ways to go for photorealism. The only thing thats getting graphics even close to realistic is hdr and even then its easy to tell the difference. The graphics inside the carrier in Crysis are incredible but still nowhere close to photorealistic. Most UE3 games dont even have real time lighting.

I think about 10x the power of current hardware to do photorealism.

Of course games will change when this happens. Devs will start focusing more on gameplay and story.

though CGI effects aren't, which I think is the main way one can tell we won't have photorealism for a while (for instance, Doom 3 resembles Starcraft's CGi greatly, and that was a 6 year gap).

Too true. Though photo-realistic graphics would be great, a game isn't made great by the way it looks alone. We still see that today with next-gen consoles. It may look pretty, but without other innovated gameplay mechanics, a game can still turn out to be money down the drain.

Though I can't say that any real eye-candy doesn't interest me.

We already have close to photorealistic graphics. Look at screen shots of crysis. What will make graphics look more real now is better physics.

Im sure at one point there will be no need to push the graphics (or not so huge leaps at least) and thats when they will have more time to focus on gameplay and story. :D

15-20 years ago, people made the same prediction. Truth is, the boundaries are always shifting. What people thought was photorealistic CGI 10 years ago, is now looking pretty basic.

Crysis looks good, but realistic? A fixed shot taken from a distance maybe, but you only have to play for a few seconds to see it doesn't even come close.

Yeah I'm pretty happy with say CoD4, to me it looks great. I can't imagine someone making that sniper level look any better in SP. Maybe the buildings and some of the plant life could use a boost, but overall I'd be happy with that for the next 20 years :)

The AI needs help though, games still script way to much and leave you with a feeling that you didn't really 'change the world'.

Yeah I agree with you.The graphics are cool as they are now, they should start working on improving the AI in the games.

It aint gonna stop in PhotoRealism. After Nvidia and ATI release cards capable of photorealistic level of detail, they'll move on to something else like virutal 3D and holographic games lol

No, IMO it will take longer. You would have to render amazing architecture, textures, and draw distance while maintaning an insane resolution.

I do not think that is CGI, Metal Gear Solid has always used in game graphics for the cinemas, and I played MGS4 at TGS and it looks just as good in game as it does for all those trailers they rape us with.

20 years.... try 10, or even 8. Look IBM has said they are about 2 years away from a 300GHZ Quantum CPU that uses atoms instead of transistors. We have solid state HD's that are getting easier to manufacter cheaply (imagine a 5TB HD with no moving parts to crash). Video card technology is bound to leap forward at a steady rate, and with the advances of CPUS, RAM and HD's, 20 years is way out of sorts for photorealistic images in games.

Well If I could play at very high with full AA at a smooth 60FPS then that would still be the closest we have to photo realism yet. Now we just need a super computer that can do that :P.

I totally agree. Crysis looks damn good, and is by far the highest quality of real-time, in-game attempts at photorealism thus far. But it isn't even slightly close to 100% photorealism. Even nVidia's Human Head tech demo is noticeably fake, though definitely closer to photorealism than anything I've seen as of yet.

It'll be a long time before we see such photorealism that you can't see the visuals signs here and there that it's fake, that it looks literally real, as even CGI isn't there yet.
