Here's some tips, don't get CounterStrike if it's more than $5, it's not worth it. (yeah go nuts and scream at me but I hate that game, it's so boring) here are some games you must get for the PC:
Battlefield 2
F.E.A.R.
Knights Of The Old Republic
and Doom 3 just for cheap laughs with your friends. Tip: play F.E.A.R. and Doom 3 only when it's dark and with friends.
Does doom 3 even have an online community anymore? Anyway i would suggest buying acopy of HL1then get the following mods; The Specialist, Natural Selection andCS 1.6. Also pick up HL2 Orange box which will be released in the next few weeks.
If your feeling incredibly old school then Quake 3: Arena is still alot of fun to play online. That's if it's still going (shows how much I thought about things before posting this). Other than that Team Fortress 2, bundled within the HL2 Orange Box Edt, is brilliant. It's still currently in beta but it's stupidly addictive if you ask me. That's what I'd reccomend but it's all about your playing style and what you enjoy. The suggestions I've read so far on here are all decent.
Tribes 1/2 for FPS and Diablo II for your RPG needs. UT 2K4 is a solid game, yes, but it's no where near as great as the first in the series which is still heavily active. It's really what you make of your gaming experience though.
Go with BF2 or TF2 or even DoD:S. And as far as Rpg's go, go get the gaming edition of the Diablo series, that's always a good buy. Are you looking for an mmorpg or just an rpg? Get Morrowind or Oblivion, hell get both. :D And if you are looking for an mmorpg get Neverwinter Nights 2 or Guild Wars, unless you feel like paying a monthly subscription to play. If so, then look to WoW, Everquest, LoTR online and things in that nature.

Call of Duty (+ the United Offensive expansion) is a good FPS to start out with. And chances are you'll keep playing it for a good while before moving on (I know I did). It still has a great online community.
I suggest Day of Defeat source, because it rocks! I used to play CSS, but not anymore, but its community is burgeoning! It really depends, but you might wanna give day of defeat source a look
counter strike source became repetitive very quickly for me, id suggest UT2004: great online community + mods = longevity, also, make sure to try FEAR combat, it's free so u wont lose anything
as for online RPG - i wouldnt recommend guildwars at this point unless u have friends playing it, or ur interested in PVP
