Older games you should try:

HL2, Far Cry, FEAR, Kotor I and II, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Diablo II, Operation Flashpoint

MEGA MUST BUY: Deus Ex (NOT Invisible War)

bioshock is a great game no doubt, i still like it better on the 360 though. some games i reccomend would be FEAR World in Conflict, Command and Conquer 3, Counter Strike Source, Medal Of Honor Airborne, Supreme commander, Battlefield 2 (Choose Battlefield 2142 if u don't like hackers because there is far less in that one)

Games not out yet but i think you should check out: CRYSIS!!! Farcry 2, Spore, Unreal turn 3.

Games to avoid: World of Warcraft lool, cuz i hear its like crack.

Crysis will rock, I also like 2142 and Fear. THE ORANGE BOX IS AN AMAZING DEAL! I just got it (the pre-order) and I can't wait for the actual release when I can play Portal. If you get it now it's $5 cheaper.

very true! its like steam to give you three good games for the price of one. This time around they are defiantly stepping up with what they offer. Half life 2 ep 2 (some good twists will surprise you guys) Team fortress 2 (the successor of the ground breaking online game Team-fortress, but with a cartoonish style) And the new portal game, which will be cool to play around with!

Try Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Fast Pace and it is a lot of fun to play. The AI's are great so you wont have to worry about the jerks on the net.

Start off with Blizzard games. Get the Diablo, Starcraft and Warcraft battle chest. DON'T get WoW. I have seen too many people swallowed into it. Also get HL2 and Counterstrike Source. Maybe try Sam and Max season 1.

Joe_Crow

I like BF2142 personally. The unlock tree is neat, and the future setting is really cool. Theyre both good, but 2142 just seems a bit better content wise. Not to mention titan mode is freaking sweeeeeet!

Also, get The Orange Box when it comes out. A must have for any PC gamer, new or old imo.

Personally I would avoid Bioshock until it drops down to 35 or so bucks, its too short and bland.

C&C: The First Decade will give you almost all the great RTS games in that series, and its a good place to start.
World in Conflict is another good and new RTS.

Please, don't get Halo 2. The PC has MUCH better shooters...online: CoD2, Counter-Strike Source, Team Fortress 2, Battlefield 2 etc. offline: Half-Life 2, CoD2 etc. Be sure to try out the PC's other great genre; strategy games. Company of Heroes, World in Conflict, Medieval 2 Total War, Dawn of War...

if you're just getting into pc gaming, the three genres you should check out are first person shooters, real time strategy and roleplaying games

on the fps front, check out half life 2 (wait for the orange box and get it all at once), call of duty 2 (and 4, when it comes out), f.e.a.r, s.t.a.l.k.e.r and escape from butcher bay

for rpg, grab yourself a copy of vampire the masquerade bloodlines, and start counting the days to hellgate and the witcher

and for rts, world in conflict, company of heroes (and its new expansion, opposing fronts) and medieval 2 (and its new expansion, kingdoms) should keep you going for a long time - dawn of war is a must, if you like warhammer 40k

there's a long, long list of awesome must-play pc games, mostly from the 98-2004 period - but you can get to those later, the above games are some of the best you can buy right now

battlefield 2 and 2142 are almost the same game the only difference is the scenario. in bf2 you play with todays weapons and vehicles and 2142 plays (obviously) in the future. i like bf2 more.

As far as shooters go you can't go wrong with Doom 3 or FEAR. Doom 3 is an experience you wont soon forget. RTS games you should check out are Supreme Commander, Dawn of War (you can get all the expansions if you buy the platinum edition), Homeworld 2 (if you can find it). A really good hack n slash game is Titan Quest its alot like Diablo 2 but is set in ancient greece and has better graphics. Well thats my 2 cents hope it helps!

Half Life 1

Half Life 2

FEAR

Battlefield 2 (15 bucks on newegg.com)

World in Conflict (try the demo first might not be your cup of tea)

Oblivion IV
- Shivering Isles Expansion Pack
- Knights of the Nine Expansion Pack

Unreal Tournament 2004 (its like $10 online and 10-15 in most stores like CompUSA)

Farcry

Every game I just posted up their cost no more than $20 max. World in Conflict is an exception.

whatever you do dont get just cause. graphics are excellent but everything else is rubbish. the massive islands are almost too big and its all the same jungle. there are only 2 or 3 points of interest. the cities are just blocks. unlike san andreas they have no variation. the side missions are utterly atrocious. they start repeating the same side missions after a bit. music gets annoying really fast. not many vehicles and nothing to distinguish them. plot is non existent.no interaction with environment or other people.fun for about a day and thats it. unless you see this game for a fiver dont get it. i got it for 45 and really regret it. total waste

i got san andreas after i got this. it is utterly brilliant in every way apart from graphics. infinitely better choice no matter how good your pc is. cheers!
