Read the reviews and pick your choice. Those all seem to be compatible with your processor. This might actually have a good side to it. Since most heatsinks come with fans you'll be replacing your stock fan/heatsink for something that is actually better and worth the money. You might see more temperature drops in your cpu resulting in better performance.Â
you could use some wire and twist tie the thing back on.
just make sure its on there good and wont fall off.
Remove the processor

Pins = 478
no pins = 775
You might need a new retention module for a new HS/F
This heatsink is excellent by far:

If you have a mid-tower case, you should be able to get this thing upright and working. It's stand-up design allows it to intake air from the front of the case and blow it straight out through the rear exhaust fans.
That's great and all, but you can get a much cheaper one that is still good for half the price. I don't think he needs that, especially if he doesn't overclock. This heatsink is excellent by far:

Yeah, that's true. I've got the AMD version sitting in my desktop and it lowered my CPU temps by at least 20C.
my dad wanted to use a wire and twist it through the 4 attach holes on the heatsink base attached to the motherboard and over the heatsink though I don't know of any wires malleable enough and thick enough to fit and firmly press it down. I just bought thermal paste. Buying this kind of heat sink is what were worried about : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.aspx?Image=35-186-134-01.jpg%2c35-186-134-02.jpg%2c35-186-134-03.jpg%2c35-186-134-04.jpg&CurImage=35-186-134-02.jpg&Depa=0&Description=ARCTIC+COOLING+Freezer+7+Pro+92mm+CPU+Cooler+-+RetailThose heatsinks usually come with their own bracket and base, meaning you have to uninstall your old one anyway.
It doesn't look like the kind we had that attached using a clip but it looks like it attaches onto the motherboard somehow with those screws on the heatsinks base. Here's what my heatsink attaches too http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/3765/picture23118jan04co4.jpg
And the sink itself minus the clip : http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4803/picture20207jan04or6.jpg

If you have that kind of bracket with the 4 attach holes Like this

its probably a 478 and this fan is for 775

I dont think it would fit. (if your going to buy a new hsf i think you should atleast remove the processor and make sure what kind it is, If it has pin = 478, if theres no pins its a 775)
You could probably find some wire at the hardware store, Probably even buy it buy the foot.
judging by the picture you linked to im 99% sure you have a 478.
Dont use plastic zipties or anything else plastic to hold the heatsink on, it might be ok for a while but in time the heat might make it loose or even break and fall off.
