Yeah, if you want to play new games you're going to need a new card. That 8400GS is really bad.

not only that but that processor wont cut it either, even if you get... say a 8800gt it will run but upgrading the processor will make a huge difference.

your processor and graphics card are very very weak. You should upgrade both but I would focus on the GPU(graphics card) first.

You could potentially run up your tab swapping out your CPU. Before proceeding down that road, you need to be absolutely certain you understand the pedigree of the system's motherboard and/or chipset. If you are on a socket AM2 board, and can track down its make, you may be able to dig enough to determine the upper end Athlon 64X2 that the board supports. If it supports it, you could make the jump to a 3 GHz processor or above. Trying to transition to an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad I think is going to drive your costs and level of effort required too high for a machine that you just bought, however unfortunate.

Check the power supply that the PC has installed. Then bounce that against ATi's and nVidia's sites for the power supply requirements for their GPU's. If you have the juice, grab an nVidia 8800 GT (if you can find a decent one in stock for a decent price). If you want to try ATi, try an ATi Radeon HD 3870 (the 3870 X2 just appeared, but I do not know when it will be on store shelves or available online).

If anything just buy a better video card.

I wouldn't have enough balls to even try running crysis&UT3 on 8400GS
