no matter what settings i have it on it runs really slow around NPC's and other monsters, at times even as low as 1 fps. Can someone tell me what it is thats wrong here and why it wont run right? And if it cant be run with this computer, what computers i can put my video card into that would run it smoothly that dont cost a fortune.
what r the rest of ur specs? processor and ram i would recommend a 4670 512/4850 512/4870 512/4890 1G depending on ur budget and what is ur power supply wattage and what graphics card u decide to get u may need to upgrade that as well
Are all the drivers 100% updated? For every system you have? I know it should run, I used to play Oblivion on my old 6600GT so It will play. Update drives and then see how it works for you. If all else fails reinstall.
I'll tell you one thing right now. Oblivion always gets really really slow when there are a lot of characters around. The engine just gets bogged down for some reason. Even on my machine, the game runs silky smooth 60fps+ and when there is a lot going on it can go down to 20... It seems to be like this on every machine I've seen it played on. Your GPU is more on the low end, so this probably just makes it worse. It might also have to do with how much memory you have and your CPU.
You should install the latest patch as well as go through the following to help alleviate the slow down.

ive played oblivion on an 8400gs here were the spec.s of that pc i used (and no i didnt use the oldblivion mod):
pentium d 2.8Ghz, 2GB ddr2-800, evega geforce 8400gs (512mb pci-e x16 sli ready). i managed to handle a default quality of medium-low i had some slowdown but it was rare.

I have an Intel Celeron D Processor 450, 2gb memory(i think this could be one of my biggest problems), and a 250gb Hard Drive(+ an external 1 terabyte hard drive) and again, a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS Pci 512mb DDR2

Ive downloaded a few of those mods to try and lighten the load, but it still didnt play well. I'll try those tweaks though, I just hope in the end i wont have to play with the settings on low, i want to play Oblivion, not some game that has everything Oblivion has but looks devoid of life in its dullness. lol, funny much? In any case, I just bought this one sadly. And id been to this site where it ran something to check if i met the games requirements, and my card was above recommended to play Oblivion, only thing that was below was my ram, but the following events of me getting a best of 5-6 fps out and indoors, -unless in a simple building with little in it and facing away from all and anything NPC- made me come here to seek answers on if it was my Processor, My Graphics card, or what. And to clarify, i want being a cheepskate buying the graphics card i did, hell i took a leap of faith hoping i was going to finally be able to play Oblivion on the PC.

2GB is plenty of memory for Oblivion
the GeForce 8400 is certainly a major problem, but the fact you're using a Celeron is likely to be a major problem as well.

YES, that is it. Install it on your internal hard drive. The slow transfew speed of the external HDD will be bottlenecking your PC.

YES, that is it. Install it on your internal hard drive. The slow transfew speed of the external HDD will be bottlenecking your PC.
Not necessarily true. Is your external drive USB 2.0 or eSATA? If your HDD is external is USB 2.0, then use, transfer speeds will be bottlnecked. switching to internal may help a bit. If it's an eSATA drive, then you should really see no difference.
