I've given this game a lot more time than it deserves and it's just not working. The loot isn't randomised, the same stuff drops after 100 playthroughs of one particular level. Therefore I have pretty much no incentive to explore. The combat is utterly horrendous and uninnovative - you click the enemy once and just leave the combat to complete itself with everything being automated (for melee characters at least). My character, a barbarian, cannot touch the enemy because he either misses or the enemy keeps dodging.

I don't know what to think. After only 30 minutes into chapter 1 I'm already bored out of my skull. Every chest is locked meaning I have to bash it open and sacrifice the goodies inside. The story element is pretty flat and isn't told well, with average voice acting.

Is this game ANY good whatsoever? So far my character can't hit anything so combat lasts an age, and I'm just not getting any fun out of it because the loot is dull and nothing good ever really appears. I don't know what to think anymore, but I'm pretty much bent on ebaying this as soon as possible. Diablo 2 might be a far better option...

"Every chest is locked meaning I have to bash it open and sacrifice the goodies inside. The story element is pretty flat and isn't told well, with average voice acting."

Or you could, you know, take up lock picking. Also, mages have spells that can open locked chest/doors.

You need to open up that manual the game came with and read through it. NWN2, while not as deep as say Baldur's Gate, expects the player to at least have some intelligence.

It sounds like you were expecting the game to be like Diablo. In that case you picked the wrong game. There are a ton of classes and each one has their ups and downs, the game does start off a little difficult but you have to read the manual or be used to games like BG and NWN to start off successful. The game doesn't suck, you just dont know how to play it yet.

It is good... tho from what you say, it seems like it just won't be your kind of game at all. Its not a hack and slash and yes Diablo 2 would fit yourself better.

To answer some of your point, its not a loot driven game and you won't find new items every few minutes a la diablo. Personally i don't actually see what is the attraction to finding gear in every corner with random stats. Random loot defeat the purpose of worth and you will rarely find anything that is truly useful, with static loot when you find something you can use, it truly has a meaning.

Combat will be boring if you do play on low difficulty level, raise it to hardcore and you will need to micro manage a lot more than just clicking once and wait. Try another class too, fighters and barbarians in general have very little interaction outside the feats you attribute to them and the few special abilities they have. Wizards are probably the most interactive characters you can have.

You miss enemies because your attack base is too low compared to the enemy armor class, its a bit complicated but there is a LOT of factors contributing to it. Make sure you are not using an active feat reducing it such as power attack for example, make sure you have the stats necessary too.

The story is good enough and voice acting is alright, i don't see your point there sorry. Its a story driven game at the exception of the Storm of Zehir expansion, so expect dialogue, a lot of it. If you want constant action, its definitly not the game you are looking for.

I'm just finding it incredibly difficult to settle into the game after playing the glorious wonder of Kotor. My expectations were of course pretty damn high since this is a BioWare game. Frankly, Mass Effect did a better job of gear placement and story telling. This probably isn't my type of game since there's too much to care about (character creation and/or skills) and not enough gripping story/content (I'm sure the whole silver shard thing gets developed very well, but I'm starting to lose interest). The world feels incredibly static which makes me feel uneasy as it did in Mass Effect and the combat is woefully unimaginative - I'm sure there's something I've missed about that - but since the whole rewarding and incentive principle via loot or interesting content isn't present I cannot settle down.

Meh at least the fight hungry dwarf at the inn provided some entertainment. Next stop: ebay.

Its made by Obsidian who made Kotor 2 actually. To be honest, if you liked Kotor, it just seem like you are too lazy to put some effort learning the ruleset of the game, its based on DnD 3,5 so it does take some time to get used to. Its not THAT different from Kotor either, i don't see what is the fuss with the combat here since Kotor has the exact same type of combat.

The story is not shoved down your throat in the first 30 minutes either, its not exactly the best story ever but it is good enough. The real jewel story wise is Mask of the Betrayer, the expansion which is truly great.

The reward in this game is character development, characters interaction and story progress, if you find yourself skipping every dialogue you will be disappointed.

sounds like someone walked into a d20 game expecting it to be anormal hack and slash.

i suggest either actually learning something about d20 or giving up completely.

next time do some reserach on a game before getting it. don't blame the game if you yourself are so willing to be an uninformed consumer who knows next to nothing about what he/she buys.

NWN2 is a dnd CRPG, and it never false advertises or prentends to be anything else. it's yourown fault that you *wasted* so much time on it.

well your problem is you were expecting to be simplistic game KOTOR or Mass Effect, but many aspects of NWN 2 is much more involved than that - you have to build a character properly in this game and quite a lots of things will depend on your character stats - you hit/miss chance, dialogues options/success, lockpicking , spell resistance etc, so basically you need to properly build your character , which you didn't and hence you miss a lot of chance while attack. So, if you want to avoid all this stuff, I guess diablo 2 will be a better options for you. That said, if you are interested in continuing (or better yet creating a new character) then I would say the beginning part (first 30%) is a bit slow as far as loot variety, story progression is concerned and quests a but repetitive. The game gets much better in these regards later on

I will admit right here that it was my complete fault for buying the game and not informing myself on it prior. I don't like spreading blame as it is my fault - It is a poor shepherd who blames his flock - after all. I was sucked in by the character creation as someone here mentioned a while back that it has quite in-depth. I love character creation when it's like Oblivion or Fallout 3 where you get to customize appearance and stats. The whole feats, skills, more feats and harder skills in NWN2 is off-putting as I'm not used to it, and I wasn't aware it was based around statistics building and not on cosmetics (I'm a sucker for gear and looks). In all respects I've never played Baldur's Gate, D&D or any of the Diablo games, so I've just bought Diablo 2 + expansion to try it out!

Being a born PC gamer from FPSs, I'm far too simplistic to enjoy an RPG which is this in-depth. I was crying about this game sucking when I started this thread because I was playing it prior and got fed up. Everyone to his tastes really but at least I learnt something here: If I don't like the serious, in depth and complicated RPGs...then I'm going to LOVE Diablo when it arrives! :D

I really need to invest more time into research before purchasing games...

As a "true" rpg it seems kind of weak. There's not much exploration for an rpg, and the towns are pretty boring (lots of houses are scenery only, and the characters outside of the party are pretty weak). I still like it, but doesn't hold up too well compared to some other games in the genre. I also get a little tired of the old silent expressionless protaganist act, but that's a minor gripe since most rpgs do it. Haven't gotten to the expansions yet.

Honestly the NWN series is really NOT created to play as a single player game. Its real vision (at least in my mind) was to allow people to make and host there own games.

Additionally, NWN (as a platform for game creation) the closest thing to Dungeons and Dragons in the eletronic world and Dialbo 1,2,3 is in my view very very far from that vision. So in short, its very much not for you.

That's the exact vision of it I had initially. It seemed to be just a toolbox to create a host your own adventures and that is why I found the singleplayer to be lacking. It clearly focussed more attention on the ability to customise and create content, which just doesn't appeal to me. Also since I'm a 90% singleplayer person, and this game isn't really going for singleplayer immersion, that is why I was hugely disapointed. Really not my type of game, and you only learn that the hard way.

You can do more than that... There is a LOT of modules and content made by fans which range from adding classes, skills, feats to a whole new game or story. There is in fact a Diablo 1 remake for neverwinter nights 1, its a matter of years now before we get a load of content for Nwn2. The Toolset is imo, the most powerful available.

Neverwinter nights toolset (the first one) was used in universities to teach game design and was extremely easy to use so there is an incredible amount of content for it. Neverwinter nights 2 toolset on the other hand is even deeper but require serious time investment since its incredibly more complex but also has less user created resources since not everyone can create content on par with what the game offer.

I forget the server name but there was a server that was always up and it had a GREAT customized crafting system.

At NWNVault you can also organized game nights and recuit players for a specific hosted campagin etc.

The trick to understanding how best to play that game in my view is to some understanding how PenAndPaper games go about things in my view

SEANMCAD

Well, in my opinion the great thing about the Neverwinter nights series is that you can play it however you want. There is a lot of persistent worlds acting as mini-mmos, as you say there is hosted games lead by dungeon masters, some really nice single player campaigns and its a modder wet dream to have such a complete toolset.

Pen and paper experience or not, there is a little something for everyone but most content at least require some knowledge of DnD system. If neverwinter nights 2 had the simplicity of the original tho, we would see a lot more interesting stuff. The original has such a wild range of modules to play, modules that put professional rpg's to shame. Its really interesting what modders can do and what content you can find when there is no restriction at all on the conten that can be added in a game.

Hold on people, if i buy never winter nights 1 will i able to creat a map as big as eg morrowind oblivion fallout 3, or gothic and play my own campaign from the beginning and how complex is that can i do it myself or do i need programming? can i at least easily create a map?

Well you can technically create something as big as morrowind but in multiple zones, the toolset is still within the limit of the game engine but there is no limit to the actual number of zones you can create so you can link all the areas together. Neverwinter nights 1 level design is extremely simple, it works in tiles and is really easy to understand.

To create a whole campaign tho you will need a lot of time, understanding of the toolset and some very basic scripting skills but its also intuitive so if you bang your head agains't it for a few days you should get the hand on the whole toolset easily. Just so you know, the game was released in 2002 so its pretty ugly, the ugliness however is beneficial since you don't have to be a professional artist to create custom content. The game while really old received amazing support from Bioware, they just released the final patch in 2008 so as i said, there is an incredible amount of user made content for it. If you are rather new to modding in general it should be a good place to learn a few things since its easy to understand while being a powerful toolset.

Well you won't really see wide visible map in one shot but as i said, you can link them together, you simply get a loading screen when you exit a zone and enter another. In any case the game is pretty cheap so even if you don't like it, it wont be a big loss, make sure you get the whole package with the expansions tho. However im curious since you keep refering at morrowind, you do know that morrowind comes with a construction toolset right? Its a powerful one too but harder to learn as well.

As a general rule of thumb, if you want to do something complex, the learning curve will come with it. I suggest looking at some screenshots tho before you buy it, it's really not a pretty game, the graphics were already somewhat outdated when it came out.

yeah i know that, but the weapons the armors and monsters, plus the environment dont inspire me to make a generic rpg medieval rpg mod, you know, goblins orcs, knights , mages, that kinda stuff, you know more dungeon and dragons.... but can i set the camera stationary in overhead view like baldurs gate or diablo or fallout 1 and 2, or it moves when you move the mouse, the full 3d view annoys me...

The camera is ajustable, from what i remember by default its a top down camera you can freely move around kinda like Baldurs gate but more flexible.

I enjoy the combat myself but it's because of the spellcasters. Let your tanks run interference while you control the spellcasters and blow the enemies to hell. The learning curve seems to have deminished somewhat from BG2 (the battles don't seem as challenging.) but it's still more strategic than hack n slash. There are so many spells that do so many different things that the learning curve can be steap. I found a great spell guide when I was first playing BG2 else I would have been totally lost. Some people will like that, some won't. Plus the high level spells just seem so much more epic and powerful than any other RPGs I've played (granted I may not have played the right ones). Your not just shooting cold, fire or lightening at someone. You can bombard your enemies with meteors for christs sake! In MOB you can turn your enemies into chickens... There are combinations of spells that you learn to cast from playing or reading the forums for the game. The complexity is what I like about it.
