So, I am on the fence here between either a 1GB 5870 or a GTX470 for being my next video card. I hear that the 5870 surpasses the 470, but that I will not be able to play Mafia 2 with all the nice PhysX features. I am hearing so many mixed feelings but none that quite answer my question. I just need some help here! Here is the 470 I was looking at:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130554And here are the 5870

shttp://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20600007320%20600007602%20600007856&IsNodeId=1&name=PCI%20Express%202.1%20x16but I do not know which one I would be interested in.

There is a 50$ difference between the two card. Personally I would go with GTX470. Or even better, I would SLI two GTX460.

I was also hearing that I should do that too. It's such a hard decision, because this is MONEY. RAWR! I wish that that Dex guy from those Dex commercials was real, except that he would just tell me everything I should do...

Get a 1GB GTX 460 instead. Those first gen DX11 cards are loud, hot, power guzzling monstrosities.

What video card do you have now? If you have a decent Nvidia card you could use it as a dedicated physx card for those games that have Physx. And use the GTX 470 as your gpu. If you have an nvidia gpu you can use as a dedicated physx card then I would say go for the GTX 470. There isn't a guarantee that a single GTX 470 will be able to max the graphics and run Physx with a decent frame rate. If you don't have an Nvidia gpu already then go for the better performing 5870. Either way both cards are good and you probably won't be disappointed with either one. Unfortunately, not every game that uses Physx looks all that impressive. Some do but some of them just have it thrown in for good measure and it isn't implemented very well. Kind of like when a movie has 3D effects added to it in post production (Clash of the Titans & The Last Airbender). The effects just don't look very good and aren't anywhere near the quality of a movie that was shot with a 3D camera (like Avatar).

My current card is an EVGA GTX260 1257. So, I do have an Nvidia card. One thing I heard was that you can use an ATI card and have the Nvidia card as a dedicated PhysX card, but I do not know which is better. To have it paired with the 470 or the 5870.

A single 5870 is roughly 8-10% more powerful than a single GTX470.

Dual GTX460 probably have the best bang for the buck on the market right now. You can get two 768MB version for a total of 400 USD. A pair of those offer around 20-30% superior performance compared to a single 5870( which costs slightly below 400 USD). A pair of 1GB version will top 5870's performance by 30-40%, but those will cost you another 60 USD.

with this card, the GTX470 is a must. Dedicate one for Physx and use the other as your gaming GPU.

You should have followed up on TC's link then. The cheapest one, from XFX, is only $379. The rest are mostly at $399. The ones which are above $400 are the Eyefinity version.

I'm going to have to go with the latter which is GTX 460 SLi (two 460's). If you're looking for a single graphics card, then I would recommend a GTX 470 as well. I cannot say that I could recommend a GTX 465 or 5850 because a GTX 460 overclocked is better than those two from a combination of performance + price point. :)

One thing I also have to keep in mind is which will be the best in the long run. If I get a 470 then I may not have as good performance as SLI'D 460's, but I can buy another 470 in the future and get better performance.

If your PSU can handle it go with the GTX 470 and use the 260 as a ppu. But the 460 SLI is certainly something to think about.

if you have a SLI compatible mobo then I dont see how the decision is hard. get either a GTX460 or a GTX470 and use your GTX260 for PhysX.

This is the best advice I believe, if you have a PSU that has enough watts then go with GTX 460 in SLI, they are much cooler than GTX 470/480 and cheaper than 5870 with better performance (PhysX, 3D and CUDA are also there as a bonus). Best Deal IMO.

That was originally what I was going to do, but I thought that I should probably move onto something new, getting more support, and has DX11. DX11 hasn't really been used much or anything, but I have this thing in my mind that is constantly telling me, "By the way, I'm glad you had a nice day at rehearsal and all.....but um....YOUR PC DOESN'T HAVE DX11!!!!" It's not really like that, but I just thought I should get something newer.

Don't get either, your 260 still has alot of bang. Actually, try to SLI it by adding another since you appear to want to give your money away. You definitely don't need an upgrade as of right now, the 260 still has muscle. (btw, I dont know if you are on a huge monitor or multiple displays, please don't get offended if you are really needing to gain some more fps badly).

Well, I am getting a 1920x1080 resolution monitor and do not think the 260 will be able to handle that resolution. That is another reason I wanted to upgrade to a better card.

well the only thing is if you do that, then your 260 would be useless unless im pretty sure. unless you have a 3 way sli mobo you can dual sli the 460s and use the 260 for phys x

well, Id say buy a 460 1 gig, its fairly cheap, and down the road when you get across spare cash again, buy another 460 1gig, I think the 460 cards are the only cards on the market that does not only give around 30% extra in sli or crossfire.

Since the 460 is pretty cheap, its price/performance is nearly unrivaled, and 2 of them is outright murder.

I would personally not go for the 470, the heat and power issue are good indicators that the cards will die fairly fast, something that produces so much heat, are bound to have a short lifespan.

If the 460 (or two) does not interrest you, then I would likely look at what ATI can offer.
