If punkbuster is such a horribleanti cheat system, why do developers continue to use it?

It's not always bad. It's tailor-made for each game, and you can't get much better than that. The trouble is, sometimes it's a resource hog.

Developers continue to use it because PunkBuster is a great marketing tool. It takes a lot more time to develop an anti-cheat on your own than license some middleware. Now, you can still advertise that your game comes with anti-cheating measures even if the whole damn thing is nothing more than a pain in the ass. As for me, I've had my share of problems with PB for Crysis, CoD4, and AA. The only games that I have played with PB are Crysis, CoD4, and AA. Some quick mental math will show you that I've had problems with 100% of the games I've played with PB.

The only problems I have with PB is that never really updates properly so I have to do it manually. Always fixes the problem for me.

I would get kicked from Battlefield 2 games, but then after a quick update no more problems for me. When I get kicked I realize I need to update PB, and it tends to work well after that.

PB runs runs in the background even when your not playing a game :( I was hoping that when you started the game THEN it would run and update.

Actually it's not so much punkbuster as it is the people that use it, people just talk crap about it because they don't update it (which you can do on evenbalance.com), and they immediately think it's not going to ever work for them.

The problem is that people with single-core PC's are having a hard time updating PB.

Now I'm not sure why it doesn't update well on the single-core's, but I read this on the BF2 forums, and it was from an admin.

I found manually updating it with CoD4 to be a real pain in the butt.

I would, and still do get kicked fairly regularly because of conflicts or errors.

bf2142 is also realy bad.. pb refused to update the last time they updated its edition and so you need to manually reinstall PB in order to connect to games.
