What i need to do to make vista to see all my RAM? My BIOS shows normal information (4chips with 2gb on each). But on Windows Vista SP1 when I do dxdiag there is just 3gb. :(
I somewhere heard that i need to install windows 64bit edition. But will the normal CPU run them?

{Sorry for bad english}

windows vista 32 bit cannot detect ram more than 3gb. you nee a 64 bit operating system. it is just the OS environments and ther is nothing wrong with your hardware. if you install windows vista x64 (you have x32 at the moment), you will see you all 8 gig sticks

hmm with vista SP pack 1 it recognizes all 4 gigs for me. But I don't know why you got 8 gb's of ram I don't think anything can detect all of it yet.

Both Win XP and Vista requires the 64bit edition to use more than 3GB RAM. After SP1 for Vista it will show the total RAM installed but still only use 3GB.

8 is overkill for anything right now. But if you want it all, get a 64-bit processor with a 64-bit OS.

if you want to say make a massive map in the crysis editor for example most extremely large ass levels will need atleast 6gb of ram. also things like google earth use high amounts of ram as well. the most i have ever used on my old server was 12gb of ram. servers use a lot but for the most part the max you would need to have a great pc is 4-6 anything over 6 for regular gaming and average desktop people is just stupid not to mention the strain it puts on the northbridge.

i would say if this dude has 533, 667, or 800 mhz ram then he should trade it all in for 4gb of ddr2 1066-1200 ram that will be plenty for anything

You can disable your page file and gain some speed with that amount of ram.

WHat CPU do you have?
If you have a Core 2 or AMD64 then yes your CPU will run exactly the same in a 64-bit OS.

If you don't have a modern CPU, then I must ask why you got 8 GB of RAM in the first place.

theres nothing wrong with 8GB DDR2 reason I say this its casue its BLOODY cheap lol its one of those things where you KNOW you dont need but you want it anyways lol I buy alot of junk with this philosophy in mind however I do have to agreed with the rest why you got this much when you dont have X64 OS installed that would be pointless, 4GB would of been ok on 32 bit but yer just install 64 bit Windows provided your CPU supports this

32bit can only use max 3gigs ram and 64bit can only use max 4gigs of ram so in other words, 8 gigs is useless now.

32-bit OS's can see a max of 4GB. Thing is that intel never expected us to be still using (32-bit) x86 this long, but they needed to be able to make sure that all 32-bits of addressable memory space was functional. So the spec calls for the last .5GB to be reserved space for I/O addresses for devices. Some motherboards and chipsets go further and reserve additional space as a local cache for addressing video memory, too. However, even late-gen 32-bit only x86 CPU's (like the P4C IIRC) had the ability to address a higher-bit memory address space. Using a combination of PAE (on the CPU side) and MMIO remapping (on the chipset side), the memory controller would then move all the reserved I/O stuff to the memory space after the initial 4GB, and PAE would be used to tell the CPU "oh, hey, enable 36-bits of addressable space, and remember that your I/O addresses are in this location!". The reality though is that while any new CPU you buy now would easily support PAE, not many motherboard chipsets will actually do the MMIO remap on a 32-bit environment. Outside of some intel chipsets, you hardly ever see a setting to enable this feature on your system anywhere (and very rarely is it ever enabled automatically). (Unpatched) Windows Vista also has a setup bug that I'd had the unabashed joy of experiencing first-hand, which the install would corrupt if installed on a system that had greater than 3GB of system RAM installed. A hotfix is supposed to then fix it, and this hotfix has since been integrated into Vista SP1 (along with some other necessary additions, like (IMO) EFI support). But, if you have the combination of a CPU with PAE and a motherboard capable of remapping MMIO, you can then use all 4GB of addressable memory in a 32-bit OS. But if you want to use any more than that, you have to switch to a 64-bit OS. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Some people might be thinking they're getting a benefit from 4 sticks of $19.99 RAM or something.

You'd think they'd throw in a better processor with all of that. Yes, it will work with a 64-bit OS.

And you are wrong. Even here, it states that Windows Vista can only support a maximum of up to 128GB of RAM. Home Premium only 16GB, and Home Basic only 8. XP x64 can also support 128GB of RAM. Only Windows server editions can support more than 128GB of RAM... and those that do are usually the kind that need a minimum of several processors in the system to install, and thus would have used the multiple memory controllers to support greater than 4GB RAM in 32-bit mode anyway.

It's a hardcoded limit, and it's not like Microsoft hasn't had wrong information on their marketing pages before. And considering that nobody at Microsoft bothered to integrate the hotfix that allowed systems with greater-than-3GB of RAM to be able to successfully install Vista before Vista came out, I'm much less inclined to believe that Vista x64 would be able to address more than 128GB of RAM... especially since a system equipped with that much RAM is much more likely a candidate to be running one of their Server 2008 releases.

A good reason for having 4 gigs of ram in a 32 bit OS is so that you'll use Dual Channel capabilities.

For a 32-bit OS? Yes. Especially since most 32-bit OS's won't do MMIO remapping and PAE properly. For a 64-bit OS, you start to see significant performance increases when you go at or above 4GB of RAM, where such an amount ends up being where only a 64-bit OS can go to. When you can get away from a non-Microsoft OS and do 64-bit, you really start to see even larger boosts in performance when you can stuff a lot of RAM into a system.
