My PC is getting old.....Is it worth OC the CPU to get an extrra few year out of it?

Intel Core i7 920 Bloomfield @ 2.67GHz

Asus P6T SE MB

GTX 460 1MB

6GB Corsair DDR3 RAM (NB Freq 2138MHz) DRAM 534.5MHz)

Coolmaster 750w PSU

From what I have read this chip seams to OC well, Will I need a non-stock cooler to get to the levels of an OC that is worth the time? Any other info you need?

If so is it worth upgraging the GPU and if so what under 200 of the GB quids?

Thanks in advance.

That's a great processor. Getting a better cooler and overclocking it is a great idea. If you want cheap liquid coolers, the CoolerMaster Seidon 120 M and Antec Kuhler H20 620 are the best that I know of for the price. If you want a better air cooler, the Hyper 212+ is probably the best for the price...

Yeah, at 4.0ghz it's great. You can probably do 3.5ghz on stock, but get a hyper 212+ or something

if you're going to overclock, just read a lot before you do.

Not really, just look at method #2 http://www.overclock.net/t/538439/guide-to-overclocking-the-core-i7-920-or-930-to-4-0ghz/0_100 and see if that works.

3.6ghz to 4ghz oc will yield a very good performance boost no need to buy a new processor now the newer ones are faster per clock and overclock higher but not a massive increase in performance and for current games its good enough once OC. I have my i7 920 at 4ghz with my hyper 212(get the + its newer and better) fully stable I just have to up voltage and turn off hyper threading or it blue screens. For the gpu I would try to hold out till the gtx 800 and HD 8000 series cards come out those are going to offer a big performance boost(40%-60%) when they come out compared to current single gpu's

I have the i7 920 with a Coolermaster Hyper 515 cooling it. It's overclocked to 3.8GHz. I wasn't able to get it stable at much higher but you might be able to on yours.

mines sitting at 4 ghz, i used the same method posted above. I'll say there's  a decent improvement between 4ghz and 2.6 ghz on gaming and there are less "choke points" when gaming. Ocassionally I would get random stutters(not often) in  BF3 and fully modded Skyrim at stock, but OC'ed seems to get rid of them completely. On BF3 I average about 8-10 fps more on 64 player maps like Caspian/Kharg Island.  Skyrim fully modded out, max details/AAs I would get a bit choppy looking on stock, but OC'ed puts me at that sweet spot for smooth playing. Honestly, any upgrade to a an i7/x58 system is best put in a new GPU and even an SSD. I plan on doing a full system upgrade next year, but honest my system with my new GTX 760 (about to add another for SLI) has me maxing out every game and running just fine. No reason to spend the cash if it meets my current needs.

I've got a i7-920 D processor sitting at the stock frequency. I haven't felt the need to overclock it yet, but I'll probably do so around the end of the year when new games come out. I honestly think I've got 2 more good years on this CPU.
