Ok I had my 4870 OCed to 840 core clock and 1090 mem clock. My question is then why when I look to see what its current core clock it says 500Mhz. Or is it that it will only go to the 840 clock when its being used by games???

Secondly, why does STALKER Clear Skies have the worst FPS. At times I will be at like 70FPS and then it will drop to 0. Is anyone else having this problem with FPS drops like crazy???

Stalker is a horrible game anyways. So it must be your PC not agreeing with your decision to play Stalker and acting up on you.

When the card is idling, the core clock runs at 500mhz to save power and produces less heat. Once you run an application or game that uses your video card it'll run at 840mhz.

Not sure about the bad performance in clear skies, are you using the latest drivers?

No suck luck. I installed the new 8.9 drivers. Clear Skies still runs like crap and cant make up its mind on what fps its going to give me. Im not even running in DX10. honestly I think the patch did this because before in Dx10 with everything on max I could get around 25-30FPS.

You had a 7900 GX2 before right? Did you use driver cleaner or anything when uninstalling the nvidia drivers? Because before I got my 4870 I had a 8800gts and I had performance issues after the upgrade. A fresh installed of windows solved the problem, if you've already done that then i'm out of ideas.

To answer this question, the core clock will stay at 500mhz on idle. When you launch a game or a heavier app, it will go up to 750+. They do this to save energy and reduce heat.
