Like the topic says, I'm really disapointed in this game, i thought it would look much better than it did. I'm running it at 1024x768 and should be getting at least 60 fps constantly, but im getting anywhere from 400fps to below 40. and there are harsh lines between textrues jutting across the landscape everywhere. Is there an option to get rid of these performance/graphics issues? I get lag at the weirdest times, even when im looking at a wall outdoors.

the texture pack will make it look better, it should decrease performance.

what do you mean about harsh lines between textures. if you mean the titling then you can improve that.

enable v-sync if u can, that should remove the screen tare. also ensure the game is fully patched. im assuming ure not using any mods...if u are then one of them might be causing a performance prob also. im also asuming that all ure other drivers are up to date.

wow you should be getting everything on high at max resolution and high performance. I only have an 8600 and I do?? I've never had problems with bad textures and performance problems. You installed all patches and latest GFX drivers right??

Last I checked, mid 2006 was two years ago.

As I recall, there was a more recent official patch for the game, but I don't think it did much other than slightly improve some of the textures. It's worth a shot though. There are also all kinds of 3rd party texture packs if you want to try those. You should be getting much better framerates with that card. It runs smoothly at 1680x1050 with everything on high on my 640 GTS, and your card is significantly better than mine.

You can also try the Oblivion tweak guide over at tweakguides.com if all else fails. It really helped me back when I was using my X800 Pro, which could barely handle the game without a lot of tweaking.

You're having no performance issues. Oblivion is still a fairly performance heavy game, even today. Just below 40 as a minimum FPS in Oblivion is normal even at that res and is widely considered very playable, but if it isn't enough for you, you'll just have to lower graphics settings. As mentioned before, turn V-sync on to get rid of the tearing (though you will probably take a somewhat large performance hit).

It's not even quite 2 years old yet, actually.

I've finished this game with an overclocked 8600GT/512MB , and I didn't have any problem.

this game is the best RPG out there , I give it 9.5/10.

PS : the game is not 3 years old !

it's not even 2 years old for god's sake !

No, but it will make it look a whole lot better. I don't understand why you aren't getting at least decent performance. Granted Oblivion doesn't take advantage of dual or quad core processors and doesn't recognize ram above 1.5gigs.... but still.

Why do people keep saying they don't know why he's getting that kind of performance? 40 FPS as the minimum, as in that's as low as it ever dips, is decent (more like phenomenal if you ask me, but I'll leave it at decent), and it's totally normal for even his rig. Well, unless he's got all the sliders to the left in which case I would imagine he should get better performance, but he didn't say anything about them so I assume he's got them maxed out. Oblivion's still a game that'll push your machine a good bit.

when i say harsh lines i mean those between the far textures that are blurry and the near ones. In all the screenshots i've seen it doesn't look near as bad. Actually, i do think Oblivion does have a multithreading capability you can enable via the INI. Just out of curiosity, is it possible that overclocking will actually hurt my performance?

Then the performance you're getting is totally normal. Oblivion may be almost two years old, but that doesn't mean it's a pushover. It was just about the most tasking game out there when it came out (to give you an idea, it chewed up systems and spit them out almost as vigorously as Crysis does now [almost]).

I recommend updating all your drivers. There's also tweaks for Multicore users as well as ram tweaks. Here's a simple guide:

JP Russel is right. With all the sliders maxed 40 FPS outdoors will be normal. You could probably add a bunch of graphical mods without a noticeable decrease in performance since I'm guessing the only thing bringing you down is foliage.

I think there is a good chance those lines you are talking about is due to screen tearing because you say your fps varies from 40-400fps. Enable Vsync to lock in your FPS @ 30/60fps and it will get rid of screen tearing.
