What's wrong with Newegg? It's as reputable as retailers (online or B&M) get.
Anyway, the big question is just how important you think gaming is. Gaming/gaming capable laptops in general are a terrible investment (they're generally big, heavy, run hot, get relatively poor battery life, and are overly expensive relative to performance), and at ~$1000 you really have to compromise in order to get the CPU+GPU you want. So unless gaming is *that* important to you, you're going to be better off with a cheaper/more portable model and sticking to the odd game that does run on integrated graphics.
So that said, my recommendation would be the Alienware M11x. It's not a gaming monster by any stretch and it's ugly as sin, but you still get decent performance without sacrificing much on the portability or build quality side of things, and it comes in at $1000 before taxes.
The other recommendation I'd have would be to look at building a small budget gaming rig and using a cheap tablet/netbook for taking to class. You should be able to easily do it for $1000, and you get superior gaming performance while still getting something nice and portable.
