Which don't you like specifically? I really liked HL2 and the episodes but I did not care much for HL1. I forced myself to finish it because it's a "classic" and I wanted to get it done but I did not have much fun at all. Something about the pacing of the game was just not fun.
HL2 has solid mechanics, an interesting story to push it along, and amazing presentation value. IMO of course.
yeah i felt the same way i enjoyed hl2 quite a bit more then the original half-life I'm gonna give it another chance once black mesa comes out and hopefully finish it this time.Which don't you like specifically? Same here. I enjoyed HL2 and its episodes way more than HL1. I'll probably bother to beat it properly once Black Mesa comes out (if it ever comes out).
Theirs nothing wrong with you everyone has different opinions on games like for me I don't like the Halo series or most popular series at that.Idk to me it just doesnt seem as great as many claim it to be. I liked the first one because it felt groundbreaking for its time. By the time the follow-ups came out, I had played Far Cry and have a much more difficult time enjoying a totally linear experience like Half Life.
You basically spend the whole game going down a 10 foot wide in-game path trying to give the impression of being in a large world. After actually playing in open world games, stuff like Half Life and Call Of Duty feel like roaming through a movie set. It looks great, but if you try to do anything out of the ordinary, you realize the world is flat and empty.
Give me STALKER, Crysis, Far Cry and ARMA II for long term play. Half Life is a once-through-and-uninstall experience for me.

Have cookie for summing that piece of tat so nicely :D
I love the HL series
however, I will admit that the gameplay is basic at best, and while the AI in HL1 was genius, the AI in HL2 is simply idiotic.
With that said, HL's gameplay is basic, vanilla if you will...but it is the best damn tasting vanilla you have ever had. At least imo.
Add to the perfect gameplay the immersion, story, characters and NPCs, and just the overall awesomeness and it leads to a great game.
I am not trying to change your mind, and I can understand why you and others might not like it, but it is definately a good game
Half-Life is mainly praised for its mythology and unique level and monster design I think. Even I find it a little boring at times, but it's still a classic and there weren't really many games that felt as claustrophobic at that time except for System Shock which is a far better game I think just for the better gameplay.
That's funny, everyone always says this, I don't even like the gravity gun. The only time I use it is for puzzle solving. Yeah, it was fun using it to pick up saw and decapitate baddies with but other than that I thought it was over-rated.I don't like it that much either. Only good part about it is the Grav Gun and the... do they call it "lore" in a FPS? Well... the universe is cool, but that and the Grav Gun is pretty much all thats standout to me.

I can't myself to bring HL2. And I'm not going to even bother with HL1 because I heard it's not as good as HL2.scar-hawkLet me tell you what i think, i played hl1 about 15 times and its the best fps ever, as for hl2? For me its a borring unworthy sequel that i pused myself to complete it once and i managed to finish it twice because belive it or not, new games are getting from bad to worse than even i hl2 which i thought it was pretty meh, managed to be more entairting than some of the new games!!! In other words HL1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>:P>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>HL2 I would put a few hundrend of fps before hl2 since i think hl1 is the best fps ever. (Yes i do actually like so much the first game and dislike the second so much for being so diffirent, soeme thing happened with deus ex and invisible war ;) I would rate hl1 with 9.5 and hl2 with a 7.0 They are really diffirent, so i would say, give it a try!!
I didn't like any of the HL games. I'm not much of FPS fan though.
Perhaps that's why I love the Call of Duty games.

that makes no sense
People here have said COD games are for noobs that are not good at FPS games.[QUOTE="Macutchi"][QUOTE="sleepingzzz"]

People here have said COD games are for noobs that are not good at FPS games.Which is ironic as hell, since hl2 is even easier than cod series with even weaker ai!!! So how hl2 is not a game for newbies in fps gaming? Not trying to annoy anyone , but i am just saying that the real reason people here dont like cod games is because they are simply aim and shoot without "gravity gun" and "Fun physics" :P...and not because cod are easy games;)
But seriously i prefer cod over hl2. Why? Because i prefer having many guns and kill soldiers without having to grab stuff with my gravity gun!!! How did my fps taste shaped up like that? I dont know, it propably had to do with the fact that half life was my favorite fps and it had much better weapons than hl2 plus it was full of soliders to kill with very advaced AI that played as a squad!!!
Hell even other oldschool fps i have loved like doom2 or quake 2 or deus ex or rainbow six, or even unreal, were based in killing soldiers, human or aliens but still you where using guns and skills and not Gravity gun stuff to pick up hovermines and place objects on the sand to walk on, in order to walk on them so you wont wake up the antilions!!!!
^ I dont know how objectives like that made sense or how they were relative to half life, so its safe to say:
1) I have the right reasons for liking the first and not the second
2)Hl2 is easier than cod, the reason people prefer it over cod is because its pretty much aim and shoot, and thats all there is to it.
3) All fps i like focus in shooting first and second in other stuff such as abillities or vehicles.
So i just found out why i liked the first hl1 game and why i disliked hl2!! Thanks for the help people;), that question was bugging me since the release date of hl2

both are fps, cod games are probably more recognised as fps tbh
The Half-Life series is praised for its emphasis on quick thinking and problem-solving rather than gunplay, as well as for its incredible presentation. The whole series has had an absolutely epic feel to it, as it keeps the player constantly moving on to new challenges and scenarios, and having to think to survive. The fact that it also has great combat is just icing on the cake. So it's not necessarily that it does everything extremely well, but moreso that it manages to do everything, and put it all together in a way that's simply outstanding. But even beyond that, it's praised because there simply isn't anything else quite like it.
The series isn't designed to be a hardcore, run-and-gun, finger-frying, bells-and-whistles FPS. Therefore, it's true that it isn't for everyone. It's not the kind of game you brag to all your buddies about pwning at or anything. It's just an incredibly well-crafted single-player game series that has dared to innovate, dared to do something a little different, and has really done it right. And yes, it's true that there's a bit of "you had to be there" to take into account regarding the first game, but it really is one of the most significant titles in gaming history, and the sequel certainly did a lot to help it hold that crown.
So, sure, maybe you just kinda had to be there from the beginning to really enjoy it. But yes, on some level, I do think you must be crazy.
Exactly. To rephrase: it's the corridor shooter perfected. If you don't like corridor shooters, you won't like the HL series. With that said, HL's gameplay is basic, vanilla if you will...but it is the best damn tasting vanilla you have ever had.

You are entitled to your opinion of course....
but, HL2 is my 2nd fav PC game ever, so I'm pretty much the opposite.
Original HL is in my all-time PC Top 10 as well. It was a HUGE revolutionary step forward and changed the course of the FPS, but it hasn't aged well, so those playing it today will find it pedestrian, not realizing that much of how their fav shooters play out now is due to a debt owed to the original HL.
I sometimes act like it's not all that when it comes up amongst friends, but the truth is, I've never really played it. I tried 3 times to play the first game, it didn't really hook me in the beginning.
However, that is not why I quit. I've played other shooters fine, but for some reason, Half-Life is the one game that makes me nauseous. It's something about the way the running and stopping works, and the way that the image warps around the edges when I look around. I wonder, to anyone who has experienced this, does this carry on to the sequel and other Orange Box games? I ask because I'd really like to try out Portal, and worry about getting sick.
The games are very good at blending atmosphere, puzzles, action and story together. They vary between these things at a pace that keeps me interested in them from start to finish. People who really enjoy these type of games (me inlcuded) are going to praise it of course.
I don't know if there's more than that to it.
