I see they now have deals on it on Steam. My questions are...
1. Do I need to play both 1 and 2 in order to enjoy them?
2. Is it really that important that I can transfer characters?
3. Should I wait until 3 comes out ans skip 1 and 2?

I would say playing the first is a must. I have only completed the first. I but completing it competely only on the xbox360. But I found a save game file on Mass effect game saves website. (forgot the actual url) that closely matches my playthrough almost to a T. So I think I am going to load that up once I get ME2 to transfer my character into that.
I will be getting ME2 on pc, but I don't think I will get it during this Autumn sale, but I will during the Winter Sale.
The series is great.
Don't wait till the third one. I would play through the first and second and see if you really like them enough to worry about an expensive part 3.
1. You'll definitely understand the back story and characters more if you've play the first before the second.I see they now have deals on it on Steam. My questions are...

2. Yes, because starting from scratch on ME2, the game chooses the major decisions from the first game for you.
3. No
I would play both. I found ME2 to be much better. For ME1 I would just do the main storyline as the side quests are extremely bad.

sleepingzzz
Yea, the side stuff is pretty crappy in the first one, just play the main quest which you can do in under 15 hours. Its worth it to have the save plus understand the story. Some of the decisions you make in ME1 will be important in 2 and 3 when it comes out.
Mass Effect 1 is probably my favorite Sci-Fi RPG of all time. ME2 is a great sequel, but much more dumbed-down than the original (turned into more of an action game).
I would highly recommend enjoying both games before getting 3 since all of the choices you made in the first two will carry over. However I thought ME2 was recently patched allowing you to make the "big" choices from 1 in a comic book esque cut scene.

1. Yes.
2. YES!
3. Hell no. This is a soap opera. You HAVE TO play them in order to understand the story.

You should if you want the games to make sense
2. Is it really that important that I can transfer characters?
It is one of the best features of the game, so yes
3. Should I wait until 3 comes out ans skip 1 and 2?
That is like watching the last third of a movie and skipping the rest of it, you won't have an idea what is going on. I'm sure they'll have some type of re-cap, but it still makes no sense
on transferring characters from ME1 to ME2, its not really the character that are transferring but rather the decisions you made in the first game will carry over to the sequel. (I.E. the people that died in your ME1 game will stay dead on your ME2 playthrough).
your character level will be back to scratch because ME2 has a different character levelling system than ME1.
****guys correct me if im wrong on this next part. thanks.***
as far as i can remember, if you reach level 50 on ME1, your ME2 character will start at level 3. or if you rech level 60 you will start at level 5.
The first game really is a must. It basically explains everything thats going on. It's sort of like starting on book 2 of the lord of the rings. + The first game was MUCH better story wise so I don't see why anyone would want to skip it.
Transfering characters is important if you care about the choices you made. Some of them can alter things quite greatly.
DO NOT wait for the 3rd to play the series.
You don't really have to play the first one, but you should because its just an awesome game too. Transferring saves is pretty cool but I guess you could do without for a lot less fun. Don't skip these two games and wait for the third. Just get them both on Steam now. 5 a piece is a great great price for both games.
I can't believe people are saying to skip ME1? Are you f'in kidding me. ME1 is brilliant. ME2 is damn near skippable. Just youtube it. All you do is recruit and please new ally members.. and the ending straight up disappointing. The collector's were a threat? The story wasn't even fleshed out. ME2 was a snooze-fest.Elann2008I'm afraid that this is going to be the first time I disagree with you. :( I thought ME1 was very boring and only played 8 hours of it before I quit altogether, but I loved every minute of ME2. So my suggestion would be is to play ME2 no matter what, and it doesn't make that big of a difference, however if you want to control all the choices you ever made in ME1 then get ME1, besides it's less than $5, so you probably won't regret buying it anyway.
