I think that the bar for oblivion was just set too high. When I played morrowind it was a maasive step up from the previous version with its 3d graphics and open world. Oblivion simply couldn't be as inovative.
I will aslo says that despite the huge play it got I really think oblivion in a niche game. A lot of people just look around and say "Okay what do I do now?" The open world format doesn't apeal to everyone but I am glad you can appreciate it now.
The only fun I got out of Oblivion was the 4 hours it took to beat it. I've tried the mods. They don't help the bland environment, unimmersive travel system, annoying UI, and short storyline.GodLovesDead
Did you try the Unique Landscapes mods for fixing the environment, and Cyrodiil Transportation Network?
Is it erroneous to retain an opinion now?niirx
A lot of people on these boards haven't yet figured out the difference in opinion and fact. If you say you like something about a game you'll often get people telling you that your opinion is somehow wrong.
Oh, and I find it's best not to focus on the combat or story in Oblivion. The best part in the exploration of the game world, appreciating the scenery and doing quests. I've never heard anyone say they thought the combat or story was great.

I tried neither, because with the amount of mods it was taking me to fix the game Oblivion began to crash often so I downsized on the mods a bit. I'll be sure to give those a try next time I install it though.
I tried getting into oblivion 4-5 times, but always stopped playing it after 2-3 hoursnaval
Hmm, those first two levels really get the game to a poor start.

Thats what would happen to me, and for some reason *puff puff* it just stuck this time 'round, and I had a lot of fun with it, and will most likely continue to play it for a while.

well the first time i played it for quite some time (close to 10-12 hours) and kept it away. after that i tried 4-5 times more. So, I played a lot of game and tried to enjoy it but couldn't really do so

same thing has happended to me as far some moves are concerned :) but never with a gameAs a roleplaying game, Oblivion is an absolute abomination, but I absolutely love the game.
Up until Crysis, it easily had the nicest outdoor environments I had ever seen - and along with Crysis, it is one of the few games that is capable of conveying the beauty of the natural world.
I could go on for hours about how bad a game Oblivion is, but I loved the world - just walking around and exploring it. As a roleplaying game, awful - but as an experience, it was without equal. And for that reason, I spent over 100 hours playing the game.
I tear the game apart in RPG debates, because the game utterly stinks as an RPG, but there are things I love about it.
