Dungeon Siege is one of the absolute best hack and slash fun times there is and the sysreq is pretty low
Baldur's Gate 1&2. Absolute must haves.shinian
They had that game (Both 1 and 2,  the Amn and the other one whatever it's called) on sale for just $7.99 on Amazon.com about a week ago.
the following are must-haves: bg, bg2, fallout, fallout2, planescape: torment, kotor and kotor 2
i would put diablo and diablo 2 up there as well, except they're not really rpg. nwn is pretty good but not in par with the ones mentioned above. icewind dale and icewind dale 2 are similar to bg and bg2 but not nearly as deep. morrowind is almost up there. dungeon siege and dungeon siege 2 are good if you're just looking to kill some stuff. oblivion blows dogs. ok, it doesn't, but it's not as great as so many newbies say it is. if you want to go really old-school, might and magic, ultima, wizardry and betrayal at krondor are (were) awesome!
What the...5 replies and nobody has said anything about Fallout 1 and 2? For shame...Ein-7919
Haha! You're right! Fallout (and Fallout 2) is the best RPG series!!
'Diablo' is an absolute must have, I played this game for ages until I got my new PC. The 'Baldurs Gate' series is also excellant and will give you hours and hours of play.
Â
Somone suggested 'Titan Quest', but if your PC is old it wont be worth it. Don't worry, 'Titan Quest' is just a glossy 'Diablo'. I have finished TQ and was pretty much done with it, but I played D2 over, and over again. TQ may look better but Diablo was more fun.

I'm a huge Diablo and Diablo II fan (Diablo II could still hold my attention for hours), and I recently played through Titan Quest (good game, but I have no desire to play it again), and have finally decided to try out an oldy but goody...Divine Divinity. I had never played this game til about a week ago. It's pretty awesome! I have a new addiction.Animorganimate
Agreed. The fact that there is only one character really sucked. At least in D2 when you tried a new class you actually looked different. That killed the replay value.
I heard DD was a little gem but couldn't find it any where. Does it stand up by todays standards?
Planescape Torment, Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum.
Great games if you look for sth new in the genre.
Eye of the Beholder, Might and Magic, Ultima are ultimate classics.

I have spoken.

This is the man to listen to, especially if you've played a number of generic fantasy whatever top down RPGs in your time, and you're looking for something unique, brilliant, mindblowing and different
If you're looking for a slow, paced, massive, breathing world:
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2
Ice Wind Dale
I've never played Planescape but I've heard it's very good - don't know what the gameplay's like though.
Very fast, hack and slash, linear gaming:
Diablo 1 & 2
Another pretty slow game, very open ended, and the height of immersion:
Morrowind!
Thanks a lot, great answers, would Morrowind run well on an older model computer (It runs XP and has 2 GHZ so it isn't that old but kinda sucks for gaming). Also I just finished the demo for Diablo and it's a lot of fun, kind of linear tho so what are some good games that are less linear then diablo, kind of like how oblivion is where you can be a thief, mage, fighter, etc. something open but with toned down graphics.mfacek
Morrowind will run.. The worst you have to worry about is not being able to have the make it pretty mods, which you still probably should be able to do. Morrowind and Oblivion are part of the same series.Â
