hey as u know already im not really good with computers so ill ask my question: i have a computer that was broken so i replaced it with a new harddrive but the thing is i have no os on it. i tried to put ubuntu cd when i started the computer but nothing happens. should i get a windows xp cd installation to see if it works?(but i have to buy the xp cd)

Make sure you've set disk boot priority to CD first in BIOS.

Depends on your motherboard. It should say something like 'hit Delete to enter setup' (or maybe F2) when you first start up your pc. You'll find disk boot priority somewhere in the options from there.

well i did that but i see 2 weird numbers and letters and the third one is a floppy disc

Ok, so either one of those numbers is your DVD drive, or you'll find the option somewhere else in BIOS. Don't be afrid to fiddle around a bit, just change back anything that didn't help. Oh, and watch the boot screen after changing those values because it's probably going to ask you to hit a key to run from cd.
