Mostly in CoD/BC2 but others as well:

Why do gamers get the game and jump straight into MP, without playing SP Campaign first?

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but was wondering... my friends (most of them) do it.

The devs created the game with SP Campaign playthrough first in mind, followed by MP, since SP introduces you to the maps, the weapons, etc at a normal pace.

Also, people that jump straight to MP miss out on some awesome/epic moments in SP.

Is it just because you are afraid of other players getting ahead of you? if so, why?

Would like to hear opinions.

So we can punish them for not having learned how to play in the campaign. Seriously, I've asked SO many people online - 'Have you played the SP??'

Occams Razor tells me that its simply because its the mode that the people are far more interested in playing.

I would have to disagree with the TC when it comes to gamers hoping straight to online. It varies on game. cod, bad company 2, halo, etc are really designed with multiplayer in mind first.

For me, Single Player is the most important aspect of a game. I don't like MP all that much and I would certainly not play MP first over SP.

I'd say that's completely false. Games like CoD and Battlefield put emphasis on multiplayer first and foremost.

I use to wonder this myself. For the first time ever, I haven't finished BFBC2 SP campaign, but I have played hours of the online portion. First time I ever jumped online without completing the SP first.

For FPS games, most of the time the MP is what matters to me mostly and ESPECIALLY with BF games. These games dont need a SP mode and they never used to have one either when they were PC exclusive titles. BF is 99% of the time bought for the MP.

The old BF games do too have a SP component. It wasn't a campaign however.

the only game i played multiplayer before singleplayer was bad company 2. battlefield, to me at least, is a multiplayer-based franchise. bad company was the first story-based battlefield game (but both still have a very strong emphasis on multiplayer). other than that, i usually beat the entire game before heading to multiplayer

I disagree.... I know they put more effort into the MP to make it the best possible, but MP already takes more effort technically. Still, every COD Game I played introduced you to the maps and weapons step by step.... so you could be prepared for MP. That's my view on it anyway....

The meat and potatoes of games like CoD and the Battlefield series is in the multiplayer component. The SP is just a 5-hr movie, and while some of the campaigns have been really good, I still find much more enjoyment playing online. I've played MP Black Ops for like 20 hours and have yet to touch the campaign, never finished BC2 or BC1 campaign, never finished MW2 campaign... I'm sure they're decent, and they have their moments, but I'm just not all that into it.

For SP games I'd rather play Risen or Arcania or.. something with some serious meat to the single player experience.

Because i don't like to rush the single player i play it at my own pace why should i have to complete the single player in its entirety or even play it all before i get to enjoy the mp i paid for the game i can play it how ever the hell i want to. And you hardly need to play the singleplayer of bc2 or cod to know how to play online there not so incredibly complex that you'd be completely lost if you jumped right in like say you would if you did the same for arma 2 or men of war.

Yeah of course....MP is AWESOME FUN..... I'm just saying so is SP, and people who don't play it miss out on it... even if it's only 4-5 hours... Saying that....if it IS only 4-5 hours (which you can finish in a day), why NOT play it...?

RTCW - Nov. 20, 2001
Enemy Territory - May 29, 2003

IIRC, Return to Castle Wolfenstein = first FPS with an expansion-length campaign, 10-12hrs (most offered 20-25hr SP).
GameSpot review: In a weird inversion of the typical shooter model, Return to Castle Wolfenstein features an amazing multiplayer component coupled with a good if somewhat underwhelming single-player game. ... Wolfenstein is well worth it for the multiplayer game alone, so the fact that you get a solid single-player game in the box can only be considered a bonus.

Cuz people want to get a taste of the part of the game thats gonna last em far past the SP. MP is what either makes or breaks a game these days unless its a SP only game. Otherwise...gotta do MP to have a game last.

Black Ops is the first time I play MP before SP. I want to play the SP in one sitting, but I'm working at home and constantly have to alt-tab, check my inbox and take a break for work if needed. It disrupts the flow. With MP there are no such problems, especially since I don't play to win:P

So far I played the first 3 levels of the SP just to see what's going on and spent a lot of time in FFA.

I got a buddy who cant stand singleplayer. If the game does not have a multiplayer component, absolutely forget it. Yes as far as I am concerned he is missing out on a lot of "great" stuff, but it isn't great to him atall. He really doesn't get drawn into video game story line's which for the *most* part are non-existant or in many cases SHOULD be non-existant. He doesnt have fun sitting there for the 4-5 hours you stated shooting ai bots, or doing any other genre vrs ai.

He gets the game to play with friends and other people for competition. I know it's a cheesy answer but, its all opinions, and his is that single player in any game is a waste. (believe me I've tried to convert him).

I completely understand you amazement. I can't imagine jumping into a mp experience without learning the game mechanics first. I guess it must be the thrill of the unknown? I'm currently doing the vietnam mission in CoD: BO and I'm fighting the urge to jump into MP for now, but it's hard because judging from the single play campaign I'm expecting the MP to be great.

That's odd. If anything you SHOULD be enjoying Black Ops SP more... because it's less like the first two. MW2 is like COD4... Black Ops is way different. For once, COD has a good story, that makes sense too.

Oddly enough, I always start by playing SP mode first, so I can get used to the controls etc. With CoD I loved the SP (finished it) and didn't much care for the MP, BF:BC2 on the other hand had crap SP (in my opinion anyway), so I only played it for about an hour, before spending an insane amount of time getting my a$$ kicked in MP.

I never could understand this either. Obviously you can do what you want, but I just find the MP to be repetitive and boring. I'd much rather be put in different, interesting situations with bots than just running around shooting bunny-hoppers.

The only multiplayer I like is via LAN and with people I know. If multiplayer moves online totally, that's it for me. I'll stick to games with good singleplayer. When that too is gone, I'm done gaming.

COD games focus more on hte multiplayer than singleplayer. The singleplayer is only about 5 hours of playing, but the multiplayer is over 24 hours. I enjoy the singleplayer. I'd wish there was a longer campaign with a better story of COD.

Because the SP campaigns suck? I love Halo online, but I can't stand playing through the SP. Likewise, the only reason I played any of the SP of CoD:WaW was so I could unlock Nazi Zombies. You'll pick up better shooting skills in MP anyways, it's just a steeper learning curve.

If the game is built with SP in mine, like Bioshock, Crysis or STALKER, the campaigns are much better than the MP-centric shooters nowadays.
