A little while ago, I decided to use my $400 to buy a 8600Ultra, a new CPU and PSU. The problem is, the 8600Ultra is probably just a rumor, so the card I'll probably get is a 8800GTS 320, a x2 4200, and a PSU. However, my mom wants me to get something my whole family can play with, which is either a xbox 360 or a wii. What should I pick, to make everyone (including me) happy

Current specs:
athlon 64 3800+
1.5gb DDR400
x850xt pe
crappy 450 case psu

If you can get a 320MB 8800GTS, an X2 4200, and a decent power supply for $400, tell me where you shop. I'm shopping there too.

Edit: If I were you, I'd buy the Wii, and spend the rest of the money on a dual-core processor (I believe you're on Socket 939, yes?)

Leave the graphics card and power supply for later.

I was seriously hoping to get a X2 3800, but it's for AM2, so the cheapest X2 I can find will be 180, then the GTS for 280, and then 60 or so for the PSU, But my graphics card is so bad. Plus, it overclocks terribly... Is the 7600GT a good card? If get one from evga, I can use the step up program and get a 8800GTS later, right?

Within 60 or 90 days or something, yes. I'd read up on the step-up program before buying. Well, it is you call, but I'd pick up the Wii, and spend the rest on your machine. They do have an X2 3800 on ZipZoomFly, but it costs more than that Opteron on Newegg.

Does your family have a PS2? That would be a better investment than the newer systems, on a bang-for-the-buck comparison considering its library of games. You could get one for about $100 on eBay, probably including a memory card.

If you have a PS2, get them a Nintendo DS Lite. That should take care of everyone in the family regardless of age or gender.

I'd spend the remaining $270-300 on a 7900GT (approx. $220). Video cards should come before all else. You could maybe buy a better power supply with what's left over. If I were you I wouldn't. Try out the new video and see if it runs into issues with not getting enough current first. You could save the remaining $50-80 dollars towards an AMD X2.

Hmm. Perhaps...something like a OC'ed 7900GS, and a Wii, but then I would have to pick up a couple of games we can all play (MOH, and ...Zelda?) That would be good though, cuz then I wouldn't need to share my monitor...My mom would probably cough up enough money to pay for 1/2 the price of a wii. Then I would be on budget...You have a point.

Honestly Id buy a 360 or a Wii too. Your mom is a smart lady. If you play a lot of high end games on PC, the a 360 is probably a little redundant since it'd be a lot of the same games with worse graphics, but a Wii is a good solid investment and at $250 you'd still have some cash left for PC stuff, plus you'd have a nice trump card to play on your mom... "Hey Ma, remember that time I bought a Wii for the whole family?"

Hey, I didn't think of that...I wouldn't play the wii too much either...Yeah, Sucks for the 8600Ultra though. Looks like I'll get a 7600/7900 and a Wii, and then cough up another 125 dollars, and buy a 8800GTS 320 later...Now what games for the Wii....

Well, zelda: twilight princess is a given, but beyond that it's up to you. the Wii comes with "Wii Sports" which is a lot of fun, and then if you needed a third game right away, it's pretty fun to play Madden with a Wiimote.

Hold on guys, still can't figure out if the 7600GT is better than my x850xt. Most of the people I asked said it was, but the x850xt has the 256bit interface...

I wouldn't buy a 7600GT over your X850XT, unless you really need SM3.0 for some reason.

I definately wouldn't do that the x850xt, has alot more raw processoing power
