well I am meeting my brother next weekend, we grow up playing shot-em ups, like rayden X, metal gear solid, aero fighters etc etc. We finished playing the classics on emulators, but need some more games for PC (yes I don't own a console), I am talking about mindless crazy explosions and just pure fun, no Modern warfare or battlefield please. I just want to make sure I get enough practice before destroying my brother :D... its personal.
So.... you are playing with your brother? Left 4 Dead 2 might not be as mindless as Serious Sam, but it is still mindless enough, especially when playing co-op.

I can't think of many shmups (shoot 'em ups like Raiden and Aero Fighters) on the PC, tho Serious Sam is what you're looking for if you want a crazy, arcade FPS, also has co-op.
MAME(Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) allows you to play just about every arcade game assuming your PC is strong enough, for instance you could easily run games like this on MAME: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cB5eIfDtYiA&hd=1&t=6s I'd recommend pretty much the entire series of Touhou Project games(and that's despite the fact they're not all shmups) which are PC exclusive, I think they're well designed games like how Mario is to platformers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdoF0iayjvs&hd=1&t=5m31s And of course probably some of the best freeware you'll find, Cho Ren Sha(make sure to run in compatibility mode for Windows 95): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igej6WV0g3g&t=33s As Noel from Blazblue would say: "Can you dodge?"
