So can anyone recommend a good mech combat game for PC? I know there haven't been many lately...but anyway, in your opinion, what's the best mech game around today?

Mech Warrior 3 was pretty good and still is. Mech warrior 2. You might want to pick up mech warrior 4 mercenaries instead and check out http://www.iswars.com/. Basically it's a client sort of like an MMO but it's free. You battle to control the planet but you need to have mech warrior 4 installed. check their website for more info it might interest you.
