Why "Atleast they will get alot money from battlefield 3"? If anything I hope BF3, SWTOR and any other EA games fail. That way they will have to fire developers. Some developers work really well when they are not being told what to do eg Maxis. Whereas some should stay with EA. That way we will be getting games from small developers that make unique games and we are getting some bigger games from the new EA. Plus it would teach EA a lesson.
I honestly didn't enjoy the beta that much but sure it gonna do well with all the die hard Star Wars fan. I'm pretty big fan of MMO's but couldn't see myself starting over after beta ends. The game will do well but lot of people gonna be disappointed and with some heavy hitters coming out soon lot people will be playing these big ticket releases. I'm waiting on Guild Wars 2 which truly gonna push the envelope on next generation MMO's.
I don't know, it seems to be missing the stars portion of star wars. That is to say there is no space combat which is one reason why star wars was great in the first place.

I'm pretty sure it does, just not free roam. It's on-rails shooting.
Also, EA claims they only need 1 million subscribers to be profitable. I think that should be easily possible especially now that Cataclysm is old news.
Already has set records for preorders, even if the game is not that great gamplay-wise I highly doubt it will fail sales wise.

Yeah, but remember all that hype for Age of Conan? Over a million sold within six weeks of launch, and it still sort of died.
Idk, but I'm not buying it. I'm done with MMO's for good this time.CoolSkAGuyYou know you aren't. Once you start, you can't stop, you can only try to avoid it for a while.
WoW is old news for every new MMO launch for exactly 1 month, then everyone forgets about those new MMOs. If they're talking subscribers that must mean[QUOTE="Iffy350"]

Especially when you enjoy that game and everything you played/play and will play in a certain period was/is and will be mediocre.
If it fails, big hit for EA, possible fata hit for Bioware or at least letting them take chances with games on EA's money.
I doubt it'll fail so bad that they don't at least cover for the expenses, they just need like 4 million copies and the few hundred thousands of die hard fans that would play the game no matter the state, good or bad/boring, for 1 or 2 years and they're set.

If The Old Republic fails finacially, I can guarantee Bioware's done for.

Bioware? No
Bioware Austin? Most likely
I agree. If the game was to fail, then the Austin studio would get shuttered. The single-player RPG Bioware studios would survive.
If this game didn't have the Star Wars universe/name attached to it, then I would say there is a good chance it will eventually "fail" like the other MMOs that have attempted to dethrone WoW (Age of Conan, Warhammer, etc.). I just highly doubt that this game as it is will fail, considering it's getting an unprecedented amount of hype and people are talking about like crazy (even those who aren't fans of MMOs).
Well SW:TOR is supposed to be the most expensive game ever made, i believe they said its budget is well over 300 million, so that failing would be a probably sting a bit.ferret-gamerThat 300 mill figure is BS as far as I recall, only came from that EA louse guy IIRC and speculative at best. What we do know is that the pre-order for SWTOR already surpasses that of Battlefield 3. The fact that BF 3 is on 3 platforms makes that even more impressive, I've the feeling that EA is going to make a LOT of money when TOR launches.
There is space combat. It's a bit like Star Fox where it's on-rails, and a bit like Kingdom Hearts where it occurs at random as you travel between worlds.I don't know, it seems to be missing the stars portion of star wars. That is to say there is no space combat which is one reason why star wars was great in the first place.

Well, that developer isn't as popular as BioWare, nor do they have the track record. Besides, this is Star Wars Universe as oppose to Age of Conan which was basically a "new idea." SW:TOR has A LOT more going for it.[QUOTE="LUMIN4RY"]Dragon Age 2 is a great game. It's a much easier game to get into than it's predecessor and it's only a failure in some peoples eyes. TOR has been being developed a lot longer than DA2.EA fail? Possibly... Bioware Fail? No way.

I do believe most people agree that dragon age 2 is a decent game, and the failure part - well im one of those people with eyes, and I think it failed to live up to Dragon age Origins, as well as Baldur's gate.
Driving in a polish Lada is decent, but that polish Lada is NOT!!!! called "Ferrari 2" and with good reason :P - if they did name the Lada "Ferrari 2" - the people who owned and enjoyed their Ferrari - would probably think of "Ferrari 2" as a BIG BEEPING SMELLING FAILURE - ofc. im only speculating ;)
Rumored to be 300 million, lol. I'm sure EA will be fine even if TOR is not a success. They are huge and very branched out. There is a lot of hype for TOR. I wouldn't be suprised if the initial sales and first 2 months made up most of the development costs.

Age of Conan, Rift, Aion, DCUO, Warhammer. All fairly recent games which had stellar pre-orders and first months before all taking a nose dive downwards to some extent or another. People seem to be gullible when it comes to MMO hype, willing to take the plunge without really knowing what to expect long term. Why that is I don't know, but I expect ToR to follow a similar path, big numbers the first month and a sharp dive in the second.Already has set records for preorders, even if the game is not that great gamplay-wise I highly doubt it will fail sales wise.

I don't know. This is Bioware and Star Wars we're talking about so all bets are off. Even if the game was complete garbage I can see people sticking around given the rabid devotion of both camps respective fanbase.
I'm not touching this game until there's a free-trial and the price is cut drastically. There's no way I am paying $60+ for a game that I'll also be shelling out another $15 a month to play. Bioware and EA have both become incredibly greedy.
The game will not flop, they have sunk too much time/money into it. The problem with most MMOs that get released, is they are poorly done, put out to soon, and are not deep enough to sustain people for very long. They are projects designed for "money grabs", get it out fast, get pre-orders,get subs, make profit.
I would argue that what sets a good mmo from a "bad" mmos is time and money. The mmos that survive put a lot of both in. WoW had a ton of time to develop,as so you got a very big, very deep game that kept people's interest, add on top of that you had a built in fan base,(warcraft RTS)
SW:TOR has done the same thing sunk time and money into the game like no other.t The game will do well..if for no other reason than Star Wars,I'd say after playing it..it will have NO less than 500,000 strong, probably more. People i think are underestimating the "bioware effect", it's a Mass Effect caliber RPG wrapped in an amazing MMO.

Any blind love starts to teeter off when the "relationship" becomes conditional. It's fine for regular games, drop your $50-$60 once a year or so, pick up a piece of DLC or two. MMO's function differently though, and after dropping your $60 and being 3 months in on a subscription and finding yourself struggling to enjoy the game you find it's much more difficult to stick around and support it just for the sake of supporting it. I'm sure there will be a number of people willing to throw money at them solely because it's BioWare and Star Wars, but it won't survive solely because of them. We saw with SWG even the mighty Star Wars brand wasn't immune to consumer backlash and disappointment and we saw with DA2 BioWare wasn't immune to criticism and flaw. Even the most devoted fan has their limits and lines.
