I7 2600 - Worth it?

So some guy offer me a used i7 2600 for 200 bucks and he will throw in 8Gb Adata Ram and i assume it also used. I been doing some research and everyone say the i5 2500k with similar price is a lot better than the i7 2600 so I am wondering is this a good buy?

for 200 bucks and you trust the guy nothing is wrong with it? I'd be all over it. The 2600k has hyperthreading and ussually cost 100 dollars more. In games they are nearly identical which is why the 2500k recommendations. In things like video editing the 2600k is the clear winner.

If you can get a i7 for the same price as a i5 go for it. But buying new, the i7 isn't worth it in any shape or form for gaming

nobody is saying the 2500k is better than the 2600k. better value maybe

if its the "i7 2600" and not the "i7 2600k" then I wouldn't go for it if i were you... the 'K' series chips are worth getting and can easily overclock to 4.3 or 4.5ghz with low voltage and on stock air cooling

As far as gaming, i5 2500k is the best deal BY FAR! I had one and it worked beautifully, i eventually returned it for the i7 2600k b/c i like to encode movies, etc.

bottom line, get the i5 2500k brand new for $220 and you won't be disappointed, besides, why risk getting a used non-K i7 chip? only difference is it has hyperthreading which has NO impact on gaming and still won't for the foreseeable future

yea i understand what your saying, definitley take advantage of 4 cores over 2...idk i just think hyperthreading isn't something even "targeted" at gaming, more for encoding etc. due to simply turning 4 physical cores into 8 "logical cores"...of course in benchmarking it will matter but for everyday gaming? i have to disagree, by the time games need HyperThreading technology it will be time to upgrade the CPU entirely and probably the GPU haha

I am doubtful, hyperthreading performance can be fairly helpful when all cores are used.

i agree it probably would have similiar benchmark performance for the most part (although which octo-core CPU are u referring to???)

anyway back the OP's question: the 2600 will not overclock very high since it's not a k-series chip, and since Ghz is still the king of performance, I would def. go for the i5 2500k, you're getting a k-series chip that will easily overclock to 4.5ghz on air...if you decide that HyperThreading is more important to you, spend 100 dollars more and get the i7 2600k, if you don't want to overclock your CPU, then get the 2600 that guy is offering you :)

thanks for all, it been helpful. But now there is another offer on the table. That cpu, 460 gtx, 1tb hdd, 8gb ram, mobo i have yet to find out and a case. All used and all for 380$. It seem like a super good deal to me but that guy seem like a douche i talk to him on the phone. He said the cpu is 2-3 weeks old. I think i probally gonna go for it. I agree, don't risk losing your money over this just to save a few bucks.

Thank god I went with q6700 g0 step instead of e8400. However intel has a track record of disappointment with HT but made milestone achievements with core & archy jumps. So if thats the case than Ill wait for ivy bridge to future proof better.

I much rather get a fresh 2500k and oc the crud out of it rather than stuck with lesser speed + ht which I dont use, if it were up to me.

Same here for my 2500k, from what I've researched about 50% of the chips out hit a wall around 4.5GHz and about 10% or so get it to 5GHz

well i bought it without the gtx 460 for 320 since i want to save up for better vid card for 1080p gaming. He said he got a friend that buy a lot of computer part to "test" it out then sell it for him for really cheap. Then he sell back to me, all the compenent look very news and i stress test everything and it all work so far. and he said he would hook me up if he get card like GTX 560ish performance. Let hope this is a real deal and nothing break in a few months lol

Hopefully it works out. I know there are people like that. I have bought used parts before from HardOCP.com and some people there upgrade and buy new things and replace them almost daily it seems. I had those parts for years till I upgraded and never had a problem.
