i7 920 vs phenom II 955

The phenom runs at 3.2 Ghz while the i7 runs at 2.66 Ghz...so shouldnt the phenom technically be faster...and how does intels hyper threading technology compare to Phenoms HyperTransport mode?

The i7's architecture makes it a lot more efficient than the phenom, meaning that even at the higher clock speed the i7 can outperform the phenom. The i7 offers more performance in applications than the phenom, because of the 8 threads, but in games where only two cores are used the performance is similar.

Basically, it's more efficient. It does it's job more effectively which results in better performance. The i7 and phenom offer similar performance in games, but the i7 offers better performance in applications. If you only mind about your gaming performance and don't want to spend more money, the phenom would be best. But if you care about your performance in applications and don't mind spending more money you should get the i7. I personally chose the 940, as I don't feel that the price is justified by the performance gain of the i7. Also the i9 is being release soon, so you could wait for that and it will probably reduce the i7 and phenom prices.

im trying to keep a budget of 1200 and i would like something thats both good in applications and for gaming

Well, if I was you I would go for the 955, but you have a big budget so you could get the i7. However that money could be spent on a better graphics card or an upgrade for a graphics card in the future. TBH, the 955 is good enough in applications unless you do things like encoding videos, edit images, videos or models.

Basically, the money could be better spent in other areas, which would improve performance more such as the geaphics card.s

The rig I put together is almost top of the line, especially if you were to add another GTX 275/4890 for SLI or Xfire.

Also physx and cuda don't really matter. Physx is used in hardly any games. Nvidia cards can also go 3D, if you liek that kind of thing. But you have to buy special glasses and monitor.
